  • Hi! I work at a big company and have always wanted to run my own project with my own team. Recently, a manager quit, and his project is being given to me. BUT! I think it might be a “sinking ship”. If...

That’s a great question — and one that reveals strong leadership instincts. The truth is, many “sinking ships” can become your greatest case study if... you approach them strategically. Before saying yes, do a quick forensic analysis: clarify the real causes of the decline, identify which parts are fixable, and which require new systems or people.

Then — document everything. Make it clear to senior leadership that you understand the risks and are stepping up because you believe in solutions, not because you’re naive about the challenges. That creates what I call “upward failure insurance.” Even if the project doesn’t succeed, your courage, transparency, and strategic thinking will earn you credibility and often your next promotion.

Leadership isn’t about avoiding risk — it’s about managing it with clarity and conviction.
