I am the deputy principal at an elementary school, and recently, parents of first-grade students have brought up a concern. The issue is that their teacher needs to eat small, frequent meals every hour due to her health condition, but young children find it difficult when the teacher is constantly eating during lessons.
I want to be sensitive to her health situation and avoid causing her stress, but I also want to address the concerns of the students and their parents. Could you advise me on who I might consult regarding this delicate matter?
Thank you for your guidance.

Has any one thought that maybe she is type 1 diabetic? Being one my self it is extremely difficult to manage. I am also supposed to snack constantly... through out the day, but cant there for I deal with extreme highs and lows. If this is the case, I admire her for trying to take care of her health so she can teach our future. As far making drinks for the day, great idea if u have the time and money for the proper produce. I would have to think that maybe on the ridiculously low income of a teacher, there might be a struggle. Maybe since it's such a good idea u can dig down deep and pay for a delivery of drinks for her to help. I don't know this person but I'm sure there is a good reason. Also stop raising weak kids. Do u not remember elementary? was it quiet with no distractions? Is life as an adult without distractions? we have to deal with? If anything, the kids will be better off as adults by forcing themselves to learn with this one simple distraction. more

  • As a teacher myself, you just can’t eat in front of students. Especially little ones, it send mixed signals and is borderline disrespectful. Maybe... there is a position in the office, tech, parent outreach, cafeteria or something that would be better suited. Keep her on the sub list.  more

  • Maybe this is a great opportunity for parents to teach their self centered children that the world doesn't revolve around them like it does at home... and to learn how to adjust to situations around them. What happens when the become adults and this happens at work, should we get our coworkers written up. As a parent I would encourage my children to have empathy for her and bring her a healthy snack once a week so she won't feel bad  more

  • Don't want to come off insensitive to the situation & all but but don't think it may be so much a health issue. That sounds more so like a... psychological issue. If nourished and taken care of correctly the human body can go on for days without actual food. Water not so much. May have need to see a wholistic health practitioner or something to access her real needs and addressing psychological conditions simultaneously; from which I think might be out of nervousness and anxious symptoms or something else undiscovered through her health/life history. Just off some opinions/readings from gauged remote experiences.  more

  • If you can eat a meal you can also drink a meal. Suggesting Drinking the meal which is better for the body since what the person needs, would get to... the blood stream quicker. Whether it’s a smoothie or hot liquid soup in a mug with lid. This way, they can still get what they’re lacking while being less distracting. more

  • It's difficult to assess the rationale for the teacher's eating pattern without knowing what the health condition is. Logically, one would want to... investigate the options and alternatives which may be open to her.  more
