Hi! I work as a driver for a large company and I’m assigned to one of the managers. I drive him to and from work and during the day if he needs it. But my boss keeps giving me more and more tasks. First, I had to drive his daughter to school. Then I started picking her up every day. Now I’m supposed to go to his house and walk his dog. I also have to drive his wife wherever she needs to go.
None of this is part of my job. Should I ask for extra pay, refuse these tasks or talk to the company director? Thanks.

I would definitely not be driving someone’s else’s child and wife around. Does the company insurance cover that ? Do you have any protections against... any accusations (if you are male) if you are alone with a female minor or the wife? Not a good situation.  more

  • I think, it's your job.
you can go on the working as driver.
you will get trust from your manager and his family.
then, it's much better for you.

  • And also if these other duties paused a threat to operations of the company, his absense during those erands, would have been noticed already

  • A driver is expected to drive vehicles, the problem here is we are not told the whole story. Otherwise you might find he/she is god parent for him to... be in the company and probably taking advantage. Why fear a person who entrust you with his family and go public? more

  • Does your JD have any other duties, if not your boss should be paying outside his pocked for additional duties or raise an issue to your HR,

  • If you weren’t aware this situation could arise, you should have been. Now it’s awkward for you, the greedy person and your boss. How you resolve this... now, after the fact, will determine whether or not you remain employed. The problem is further exacerbated by you actually performing the requests presented to you. I see only one way out: continue on as though nothing is out of the ordinary- you are merely doing your job. As for pay, I’m not sure how you are paid, either hourly or salaried. If hourly, it’s easy- simply present your hours to accounting. If salaried, also easy- refuse to work only the hours you are salaried for. Either of these choices will bring the issue to the person who can resolve it- the Boss. more

  • clearly you have brought up the matter because these tasks are out of your JD. You should address the issue to the HR and request to be assigned to... another manager, incases of accidents who will be liable, is it the company or the manager, what if an accident happens in that vehicle with his family in it? what if something happens and the dog attacks you or someone else. please just talk to the HR about this matter asap. more

  • I would suggest you readdress yourself to the job description assigned to you, and if you notice any inconsistent additional work out what u are... supposed to be doing. Share it with the manager you are driving and if he wants let him request for a change of driver. Any sane Hr would ask for your opinion as to why the manager wants change of driver then you open up to it. more

  • You need to talk to the Human Resource Officer about this, they might offer you the best solution

  • Each time he assigns you these extra duties, let him sign the work ticket authorizing these assignments - ensure the assignments are properly... documented in the work ticket  more

  • Follow your job description and specification well. Discuss the issue with the steward who is a union representative of the company employees.

  • I became a loner when I lose that job , who's here winning to help ....

  • Review your contract letter first

  • Talk to the human capital person or risk and compliance officer if you have one , they can handle

  • All of the above

  • I'm sorry, but I don't understand the problem. Are you not being paid for this work? Are you doing all these tasks on your personal time or company... time? more

  • Never start anything you don't plan on continuing doing. Initial answer should be (after thought) NO.

  • As James Kubo as said earlier, get to know the clauses in your contract.

  • I would make a formal complaint with HR as the requests are not part of your official job discription. Any accident with his family members in the... vehicle with you could be a huge liability. If he is making you perform these extra duties then this (in my opinion) would be a hostile envoronment which would need to be documented. Managers are also employees and use of company vehicles for personal use typically is prohibited. more
