I was offered my dream job, but accepting it means moving away from my aging parents. My family says career opportunities come and go, but I may not get another chance like this. What would you prioritize?

In 1999 I was offered my dream job but I would have to move from California to Florida. My mother was sick at the time. She told me to take the job... which meant I would have to move of course. I took the job and moved. My mother was so proud of me, and what i was doing. I was making more money so I could send back some of it to her to cover her bills. Did it suck to leave my sick mother, yes but seeing how proud she was that I finally made it was priceless. Still doing the job 26 years later.  more

  • That’s a difficult decision because there may not be a perfect answer.
I’d look beyond just the job itself and consider how much my parents currently... depend on me, whether other family or support systems are available, and whether the opportunity could provide enough flexibility to remain involved in their lives.

Dream opportunities can be rare, but time with the people we love is something we can’t get back either.
I’d try to find a solution that allows me to pursue the opportunity without completely sacrificing one for the other. Sometimes the best decision isn’t choosing between family and career—it’s figuring out whether there’s a way to honor both.

  • Take Good care of your parents and God will bless 🙌 with above, better than the one left because of your parents.

  • Parental Care responsibility can be delegated. A chance for a dream job may knock on your door only once and take 50 or 100 years to repeat itself.... There are care giving centres all over the world where the elderly are taken care of by professionals. .Why not engage the services of a professional care giver if your dream job remuneration can afford to pay ? more

  • Take the job and keep in touch with your family

  • A Dream JOB you can work from home and look after your parents and I believe your Boss will understand your situation

  • You should take the job, opportunity knocks once.

  • As a man of God, I would encourage you to seek the Lord through fasting and prayer before making a decision. Allow God to reveal to you his will for... you and your family. I wouldn't lead on impulse or emotions for scripture teaches us that the heart is deceitful.  more

  • I had the same situation many years ago. Only it was my wife who didn't want to move, didn't want to move away from her parents, even though we could... have moved close to her aunt. And she could have visited as often as she wanted. So I didn't take the job, but I still worked for the company and did have to travel a lot. She eventually divorced me. So in the end it was me who lost by sticking by my then wife, out of love and devotion. How do you balance that.

  • Depends on your circumstance though I know a better dream job helps you earn more, and either ways you need money to take care of your loved ones,... not necessarily your presence. Weigh the options if the job gives you options for that it’s fine to consider it but if not, you may want to give it a second thought  more

  • Parents? You're joking.
Those guys will leave you behind without a job soon, and you won't even have the money to bury them.
Please, stop... approaching life with sentiments and emotions.

Do I hate parents? No way.
But purpose and destiny is so personal that Jesus died looking at the mother right in the eyes and saying, please go away, follow John. I'm done!

  • Follow your career/passions
I and a lot of my contemporaries are faced with this now. Our parents did what they wanted and their parents didn't hold... them back, so we should also do what are dreams are telling us we should do. Our parents wouldn't want us to give up those dreams.  more

  • personally-i would take the job and use the extra income to visit parents. Get work-from-home days if possible. Hire caregivers via companies if... possible and keep maintenance. But yeah,  more

  • You can rationalize it any way you want, but there is only one right thing to do. Care for your parents (or move them once to remain with you). It... took me 7 years to complete college (after skipping 3 grades) because I needed to support my family by working 2 full time jobs while in college. I never regretted it - you will if you are honest with yourself and not just looking for equally morally bankrupt people to support a selfish decision, know what is right more
