I’ve been working as an economist in the department for three years and was hoping I’d be promoted to head of the department. But no, they told me they’re hiring some random outsider for the position, someone with no experience, just because he’s “very motivated”.
Am I not motivated? I also have actual work experience. How can I change management’s mind? Thanks.

    Sometimes your value is seen and felt once you are seen on a different table. 3 years are enough , you can sel your experience somewhere else.

  • Possibly, there are things you aren't getting right, in retrospect they have discovered that , and they want you correct it before they promote you!... there is no progressive employer who can afford to lose a valuable human resource!...just evaluate yourself thoroughly and you will realize they are preparing you for this position only that you are not yet ripe for it! more

  • As a Retired Head Hunter, It Appears That They Have Already Extended An Offer To The New Eager Beaver. That What I Interpreted By The Wording You Gave... Us. He More Than Likely Will Be At A Lower Paygrade As Well.
    You Mentioned "Hope" & As A Mover & Shaker In My Own Career, Hope Was Never Considered In My Climb. I Consistantly Fixed & Refined My Plan. What Was Your Plan? It Cant Be Hope. When You Have A Viable Plan, Then You Have Faith In That Plan & You Make It Work. Never Hope It Works. Time Is To Short. So You Fall, But Will You Fall Forward? Will You Go To Work, Pay Your Bills, While Developing Your Plan? Your Plan Does Not Need To Be At The Same Company? Stick To The Plan & Do Not Share It With Anyone. Start Searching For Other Opportunities.

  • At this point, you can’t. But you may not know the whole story. They’re giving you a business reason (motivation) when it might be something else.... Like, perhaps a relative who needs a job. Or this person was actually my best man at my third, er…. fourth wedding. Remember the golden rule: “the guys at the top can do anything they want”.
    Best for you to boogey on out of there and work for a real company.

  • I believe that three years is a good experience gained for you but with patience and the right attitude they will see your value one day. My advice is... build yourself so much that when you decide to leave the organisation, they will feel it greatly. I have a friend who was being paid 3000 cedis a month having worked for the company for a decade. The right time came and he announced he was leaving that was when they called him into a meeting and offered him 50% increment on his salary and a 1000 cedis increase every year and a 30,000 bonus for his wedding etc. why? Because he became the best. But all this offer of theirs was too late.
    So, be patient and become best at what you do.

  • You cannot decide on a HR perspective with the line manager. Not a promotion for a period of 3 years working experience there are certain things you... don't need to address on a working deligents they can be vulnerable. Unemployment equity kills more

  • Jim, it’s great that you love your job enough to continue to grow in it. Sometimes other people see something different in us. You may think you are... a very motivated person but they may be seeing something different. Are you motivated in the things they need or motivated in general? It could be an opportunity for you to meet with them and ask where they think you need more growth or help as you’d like to continue to grow in the company. Do they know you would like to continue to grow with them? Good luck! more

  • Same thing happened to me I’m a white middle aged male with over 25 years experience. They passed me over twice and each time hires an Asian female... with much less experience. Feel like I’m being discriminated against. more
