We have a guy on our staff who has special needs. Based on his abilities, we offered him a job working with documents in the archive. But he’s against it, he wants to interact with clients. I’m not sure how to gently explain to him that his work and ambition are very admirable, but we also need to keep our clients. Could you suggest how to talk to him in a way that doesn’t make him feel limited or hurt?

Thanks for any advice.

Tell him that everyone has a place. He's the best at what he does. If he were to do a job that wasn't his, we'd have to fire the person who's doing it... now, and that wouldn't be fair.

  • There’s something missing here. What was he initially hired for? And what does he currently do? The accusations of slavery and discrimination here... are frankly repulsive given the lack of specific facts. The employee may not have good people skills. Some people do and some people don’t. In our hyperbolic work environment too many people assume discrimination . Plenty of people apply for internal positions and don’t get them. Give this person feedback for how to improve or other opportunities he might be better suited for. It’s not discrimination to tell someone the truth about their skills. Done correctly, you can incentivize people to learn and improve and continue to be a valued member of your team. more

  • Are you suggesting that due to his disability he will chase customers away? Are there any DEI programs where you work? Honestly I am of the opinion he... should be given an equal chance and also upskilled through learning and development programs to be equiped at an equitable level to grow his career into whatever he would like to be. "Hiding" him behind document archives is dehumanizing, degrading and planting ideas that being in the shadows is the only place he belongs. Totally unacceptable, we are now inclusive societies. more

  • Human Resource must partake on that.

  • He’s already on staff, did he accept the position for handling the documents? If so, then there’s nothing to explain. He accepted the role. People... need to learn to read.  more

  • This person was hired for a reason- God obviously touched someone’s heart in order for this to occur. To stifle his ambition to talk with people is... inhuman- slavery has long since been outlawed where someone’s ambition to express themselves has been rejected. The answer to this “Problem” is to sit with him (someone who has compassion) and give him a few talking points to integrate into his normal speech pattern. With practice, he will not only be fine, he will become an asset. The firm will be the recipient of the resultant good will the clients will have. more

  • I strongly believe that you should support him to achieve his dreams instead of limiting him. It sounds like you are trying to hide him from people's... sight. Have you introduced him to your clients and wee their reactions? I believe that those who will be uncomfortable with him don't deserve to be your clients.  more

  • Tell him,How God created everyone cannot be blamed to anyone not to him or his parents or even God Himself.God created all of us with good plans and... intentions.Let him know that according to his special needs and abilities there are jobs he can do well than others which does not mean that he is inferior than others.Tell him that a company is just like a government, which have ministries and it doesn't mean that when you are given the ministry of eg sports or environment, you are inferior than the one who has the ministry oy security or others.make him understand that the company work like a body of a person which has many parts eg there are legs , hands, head, neck, toes etc .Then every part does it's job well as God intended it for.So let him understand that as part of that body or company he also has his part of doing which according to the capability given by God to him,he can do very well in that part you request him to fill if he does it willingly with love because with his special needs, it's that part that he can do best and the company needs him. more

  • What post did he apply and hired for? That's the bottom line. Don't push him into the documents' office if that's not his job description. Who was... hired to work in the document's office?
What's the reason for not allowing him to interact with the company's clients?

  • What kind of special needs are you talking about? From my perspective someone who can work in archive room can be assistant office administrator... despite of their status just give hime/her a chance and make observation  more

  • Good Morning Dear Sir, Invite him in the Office and inform him that although your Office has other posts that lack staff, working with documents in... the archive is the post that need potential Officer whose management have selected to be the one, wish him/her success in new Job. more

  • Depends on what special needs we are talking about. The Inherent requirement of a job is a key factor in position placement. If he cannot meet that... capability, or job demand then you have a good firm reason even under the law to decline more

  • It's not necessary to describe his special needs here, otherwise you get accused of discrimination. He is best at the archives. That's why you put... him there. Period. If he's tired of that role, he will resign by himself. Problem solved. If you don't want him to resign, give him what he wants. more

  • Critical situation indeed
Try to see the situation from his perspective and give him a chance.
Unless his job description does not permit

  • You may have to look at why you dont want him to interact with the clients.
I see grwat qualities within this gentleman already.

  • Get togetehr with HR and discuss the situation as well as the employees expectations. Assuming that you are not a medical professional, its best to... ask HR what the appropiate responce would be to avoaid any possible litigation for speaking out of line, even if with great intensions. more

  • I think it's okay to give him a chance and see how he performs. If you can recruit him in the first place, it means his "special" situation might not... be that incapacitating. While I understand that you need to keep your clients, it is also important to show some of your clients the embedded inclusiveness in your workforce. You can even talk to one of your long-standing clients and let simulate the role of a client and let the your guy attend to him. Sometimes, it is the society that "disables" those with special needs. more
