Chief Translator (April 2024-Now)
I am PesaCheck's Chief Translator with extensive experience leading top communications, translation, and editorial teams to deliver high-quality content across languages, cultures, and industries.
I am a champion of managing complex translation projects by ensuring linguistic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and adherence to house quality and industry standards. I help fight misinformation, with a number of translators and editors, on projects in or from English, French, Amharic, Swahili, Afaan Oromo, Somali, etc.
Senior Copy Editor (March 2022 - March 2024)
In this role, I played an important role in crafting, editing, and publishing compelling, and accurate fact-checks, separating fiction from facts on the African continent. Misinformation was growing so fast, especially with relatively new topics such as coups in West Africa, elections in different countries, climate change-related claims...
I spent my time managing editorial projects and collaborating with writers, translators, and editors to enhance the overall quality of content. Here, my previous experience in creative writing helped me to uphold the highest standards of editorial excellence.
This role at the PesaCheck fast-paced environment where creativity, precision, efficiency, as well as inclusion, really moulded me into a seasoned editorial leader. As I helped oversee a team of editors from Anglophone East Africa to Francophone West Africa + The Sahel, I also had an opportunity to refine my editing and to keep abreast of industry trends.
Bilingual Copy Editor (August 2021- February 2022)
In this position as a bilingual copy editor, I focused my work on the Francophone desk, my daily activities included editing articles, taking, evaluating, and approving pitches from in-country fact-checkers as well as assigning tasks. All these were done according to trends and the desk’s objectives. Burundi, DRC, C. Brazzaville, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, CAR, Mali, Faso, Niger, … were my main focus as we expanded operations to even more countries.
In-country fact-checker (April 2020-August 2021)
My primary assignment was to debunk claims in Burundi. Tasks were later expanded to Rwanda, DRC, and Madagascar.
Prior to this, I served at Translators without Borders in the Community and Recruitment team that managed a global team of 27,000 volunteer linguists across the world.
From the Ebola outbreak in DRC, the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, cyclone Idai in Mozambique and Malawi, and the floods in Haiti, … I contributed to such robust projects where thousands of pages of life-saving information were translated for crisis-affected populations.
