I'm an English teacher and I'm trying to give the kids as much as possible. I develop my own methods and tests to make it interesting and not boring for them. But someone filed a complaint about me to the school principal, saying that I demand too much because students can't find answers to my tests online, so they get low grades.
I just feel like giving up. How am I supposed to keep working?

  • Ask chatted gtp how to be a successful teacher.

  • It has been said that no matter what one does, a third of people like it, a third don’t, and a third don’t care. If only one complaint was filed... you are miles ahead of the helicopter parent who doesn’t care if the child can think critically or do research and just want the “kid” to get an A or whatever the grading system is. Keep shaping minds that can think and create instead of hoping that AI has the answer. Consider perhaps finding a school to teach in where those skills are valued. I recently went to a graduation at a private school that astounded me. Bright young people, multi lingual, musical, critical thinkers. It gave me hope. We need teachers like you. more

  • Maybe you are too check with the principal or superintendent. If I were you put a curriculum together and present to another district and become an... advisor. I thank you for trying to make fun. Education is fun. We expect so little from our youth. Don't rock the boat. Start evaluating their note taking abilities and share with parents.  more

  • From your post which I read a few times, I have no idea what you are imparting, instructionally, or what you mean by "not boring." An engaging... class should capture student attention, and then the content is better understood and recalled. Moreover, tests most often "assess" the teacher as much as the student, so review your approach, materials, and what it is exactly you expect the students to have mastered. Sorry, I cannot provide more, but you did not provide details. more

  • Alfred reach out to the students and since you are teaching them English and what kind of methods are you actually teaching them it's not like a... student to do that on purpose and make your teaching more fun and relatable to you  more

  • We need more teachers like you who challenge the status quo and demand your students to grow and develop their writing voices uniquely. You say... someone complained? What if you did an numinous survey asking your students how they feel, and what they would prefer? If the majority prefer to be ale to reference things online, maybe you can meet them where they stand and create assignments which have them find answers online, and then show how those answers are either wrong, or show how they can improve on what they find using their own research and voice? Problem is, so many students now are using AI to do the lazy research for them that a teacher friend of mine (who is also a very successful author) had his students find answers using AI, then had them write assignments to prove why the AI findings were either weak or flat out wrong. I thought it was a great way to have the students put their money where their mouths were and see the better results for themselves. more

  • ALFRED: It seems as though you have developed your own style of sharing with your students! What grade are you working with? Why not have practice... test or quizzes in preparation for your tests? You could possibly make sure the students are adequately prepared! I also suggest bonus /extra credit questions to challenge the more determined students to do more research!!! more

  • Hi, I don’t know what other contributors have offered, but it seems to me if your students are going on line for answers, they believe it’s all set by... rules. A rapper would disagree, it’s time to invent. Grammar seems to come naturally to the young, so why not make it more of a game, asking how else one might express oneself and how do you feel about the difference. I’m eighty years old and this is still an adventure for me!

  • I had the same problem about 25 years ago while teaching in Korea. You have to reinforce the attitude among your students that answers come from their... heads and not from the Internet (a general truth in any subject, anywhere). While you're doing that, try to give them what they are asking for. Moving the content online extends their practical usage outside of class, and you can use that to increase your effectiveness. (You can format that content any way you like, but no one can accuse you of ignoring the complaint.) more

  • If your student are happy and do understand you very well never mind do not convince management with word but with the real matter passed on to the... students and that is your defance not resigning  more

  • Thanks you are trying your best to help the students get to the level required. Teaching is being instrumental to have your students acquire a good... standard not only passing the exams but getting what will help them in future. In some school schools weak teachers like accusing the good teachers so take easy but play your but and prove to him that you know what you are doing  more

  • If your learners are given good skills enabling them to read and write on their own before any exercise or test then go ahead and keep it up

  • Is the learning you are after more about marks achieved or about competency? Is competency able to be measured with out a written exam? What if the... students were to submit an audio report where they were required to demonstrate certain skills?
An open book exam might be one alternative for evaluation but it would not be standard fare. In a sstudy done with college students, those that could revisit their answers online multiple times showed no retention whereas those who were told that the information would cease to exist after it was read, remembered what they read significantly better.
Re-visit your objectives. Align your expectations to the objectives. Re-design your evaluation strategies to measure a variety of learnings in a variety of ways.

  • Although it seems counterintuitive, the students have to be able to work towards high scores. Even when studying for your exams using what they find... online, they are still studying the material. You may use your own strategy to teach, but please use the exams you are instructed to use so the students have a higher chance of making the grades they need. It's way too competitive now, and there's bo way for them to keep up if you're making it harder for them.  more

  • Keep working because you want to make a difference!!! That is your purpose! Don’t let a school stop you or the principal of a school…

  • It's unfortunate that people are not concerned about the learning of their children! Perhaps they don't understand that there is "NO LEARNING"... without being "CHALLENGED" to learn!

My suggestion is that stay the course and as long as you can demonstrate the ability of a person being challenged will allow them to achieve greater in their personal lives! As well as for others!

  • You may prove to principals that your program of teaching involves topic of tests. Of course it will not work at all. Why, because whatever you as a... teacher are doing, it does not suit the "pupils" will. They do not attend in program ..., do they? more

  • Just because you are fond of English and u enjoy teaching, that doesn’t mean that the students will enjoy learning. I have 2 girls in high school and... both of them are in honors ELA, neither one of them enjoys the subject! They both lean towards the Sciences. Please teach what u are contracted to teach. If u wanna make the lessons fun, that’s great, but don’t try to make the tests harder, these kids are already drowning in tests! more

  • You’re doing the correct way of teaching…challenging their minds and not making the assignments easy! Keep up the good work!
