Hi all, I've just applied for a job and I seem to have made it past the first round (which appears to have been screened electronically), and they have "invited" me to do a "Wedge" interview. This is apparently is a screening process in which you click on the link and it starts a video that presents you with a series of "hand picked" questions (which I assume means the employer picks them) that you then answer and, obviously, your answers are recorded. Has anyone had experience with this? I'm preparing as if for a real interview with a person, but I don't know how many questions, how long I will have to answer etc. And will a human review the video or will that somehow be electronically determined too? Any insights appreciated.

Set up your camera and practice. See how you look. Make adjustments if necessary. Ensure that nothing distracting jumps out like a white tongue,... yellow teeth, stains on a shirt or collar, or inappropriate jewelry. Go to the website and check the culture of the company. Read up on link in and glass door. Make sure you know your resume like the back of your hand. Pull your most successful thing you are proud of, and the skills you can talk about from that experience. It is like talking to a video of yourself. Then smile and relax.  more

  • Dear Amy: This interview thing sound horrendous. Unfortunately, this is the way they reduce the layers of the interviewing process to weed out the... best five or three candidates. This Sucks! Make no mistake about it. However, you have no choice. This is the way of the future for HR.

Don't panic; please find solace in knowing that everyone else had to get over this hurdle.

    Here are some pointers:

1- Keep your eyes focused on your camera, not your screen. This is really hard to do, but it is the next best thing to making eye-to-eye contact with the potential selecting official.

Believe me; they will remember that you maintained eye contact and the others kept on looking away (your nervousness will come through as they view the resulting video of you answering the questions), so keep that in mind. Prepare yourself for it and you will do just fine, Amy!

I don't like this new way of interviewing, but it is part of the new wave of HR.

  • I have done on of these. Apparently, it's like the "2nd round". Mine was very short and it only required an introduction of myself and why I should... get the job. I think they just want to see how well you communicate, if you dress professional, how you act, etc., and I think "if they even like you",--which is unfair. more

  • I have a question, I had an interview a month or two ago, I sent a follow up email and she apparently moved on. So, I get a message from her five days... ago and she said they had a change and was I still interested? aOn top of that I said yes and never heard back from her? what is wrong with these companies? more

  • Find out the companies values and learn how they would likely respond to employment related questions. If it's a basic interview then most companies... ask the same question, but in different ways. In other words if I was hiring someone how would I want then to answer.  more

  • I just did a video interview about 6 months ago. It went smoothly. Like others are saying, relax and answer the questions as best you can. The... questions tha I had were about things that happened during my previous work experience. Breathe and relax. You can do it! more
