I work as a hotel cleaner and suddenly lifted a box of bottled water (we put 2 bottles in each guest room). I pinched a nerve in my back and can barely walk, even though I’m getting pain-relief injections. I stayed home for 5 days and yesterday I went back to work, but I can’t lift anything and hardly move.
Management doesn’t believe I’m in that much pain. They say I’m lazy. I really can’t work and I’m afraid I’ll be fired. The doctor said five days should be enough to feel better. What should I do?

have an an x-xray of the back done to confirm on the status of you back

  • It's a pity for the injury you sustained at work and such are common in manual labor jobs. My advise is that you could either request for... re-assignment of a lighter task which may not involve lighting weights or ask for a working tool possibly a trolley or cart to help you do the work seamlessly with the aid of your colleagues.  more

  • get extra strength back patches, it works wonders

  • were you given occupational health and safety training as part of your orientation? If not you will need it after recovery if lifting stuff is part of... your routine. Aside the weight of things being lifted, posture during lifting affect the back muscle. more

  • I would suggest you go back to Dr for more investigation since back pains can have a serious end results

  • Furnish management with the doctor's report and request for sick off.
If still unable to work, go back to the doc and get a Work injury benefit... evaluation done and claim compensation. Back injuries are no joke. Once had an employee with the same problem (am in HR). I thought he was malingering/pretending until i saw the doctor's report. I arranged for his treatment and compensation. Hope this helps.

  • By the sound of it. It sounds extremely dangerous, it's been 5 days and the pain has not subsided. You need to get back to hospital and shun from... heavy work. Get a note from the doctor to give to the management to grant you sick leave.my thoughts. Quick recovery. more
