Hello. On my first day at the new job I was given a company mobile phone. And I accidentally broke it the very next day. The screen needs to be replaced, maybe more.
How can I tell my boss about this?

  • The device is insured, accidents happen, it would be more prudent to give the information and let the company advise on the policy of handling such... cases, unlike going to repair by yourself and it looks like a coverup ,,I am sure they would respect your decision of reporting and facing the consequences as opposed to appear as covering up a mess. more

  • To me, the circumstance leading to the breaking of the phone is key. Yes, accidents are unplanned. You need to tell them the truth and wait for the... answer, but don't give suggestions or show you are ready to to take the responsibility unless asked.  more

  • You tell him/her. That’s the answer. What are you, 12?

  • The truth will set everything well. Though being company item contact the IT department

  • The truth will set everything well. Though being company item contact the IT department

  • The truth will set you free, no one will flog a grown up for telling the truth. Just open up and see what happens next.

  • Unless you purposely broke the phone, I wouldn't worry about it to much and tell the Boss what happened. They will probably tell you to be more... careful, maybe suggest they buy an Otterbox or some kind of protective case, or buy one yourself to protect their phone.  more

  • Is good to say the truth because they may discover you spoil it during investigation even if they will deduct the repair fees from your salaries is... better than to lie as a good manager. more

  • You can accept to incur the costs of replacing the screen for now. You can never know how the boss will react since it's a new job. You are still... learning the culture. Honesty can wait for now till you have fully learnt the institutional culture  more

  • Dependant on the companys and your needs, there is an amazingly simple and helpful App called PHONEADO. The phones are cheap (approx 100usd) and you... can access your contacts, images etc from therein, great for travel, kids, and thos with slippery fingers ;)
Look into it and might worth suggesting to corporate to provide those instead of expensive over-spec´d smart phones

  • Tell immediately. You need a protector on the phone.

  • And just FYI, do not ever use a company phone for personal use, unless you dont mind the information being public.

  • Your not the first person to break a company phone and they have insurance for that. You may have to pay a fee to have the phone repaired. If, you do... not tell your boss right away, it will reflect on how they think you will handle everything at work. Such as, not being responsible, not taking care of things right away, or perhaps dishonesty. They should of bought a protector case with it. Pay the deductible if needed. more

  • The phone is the company's property. The IT division of the company and your boss need to be notified. Companies that distribute equipment will also... purchase an insurance plan to cover that equipment. Depending upon the nature of your business, the integrity of the company may be potentially compromised with changes in the equpiment / access to that IT equipment. Immediately notify your boss and the IT department. Do not risk compromising your new company by turning over the equipment to a 3rd party to "repair". It is foolish to consider replacing it on your own. Accidents happen. Over more than 20 yrs in business, I have had my phone stolen, temporarily misplaced, and/or lost during travel. IT immediately turned off the old phone, protected the company, and replaced or used the locator to find the phone. Depending on the size of the business and the company policy for their equipment you may be required to make some restitution or not. Check with the corporate policy.  more

    2things
1.Company phones are usually repaired and maintained... by the maintenance departments in some companies.
2.For those without the company maintenance team usually does the repairs Because those gadgets are either hired or bought by the company .they can do a salary deduction under staff debt to do the repairs or you go and repair it yourself.so don’t be silent talk about it and hear what they say

  • I would replace it myself. Makes you look unreliable.

  • Just tell your boss. Most likely they will send you a new one and have you return the damaged one.
