I had a job interview, and at the end they asked me how much salary I expected. I didn’t give a clear answer at first, but they asked again two more times. When I finally said the highest amount I was hoping for, they told me I was too expensive for their company.
What should I have said instead?

  • Some interviewers use this question to lay off people and I was advised to say....the appropriate salary the organization pays a person at my level .... Period. I don't know how true that is because I haven't been to any other job interview after having my first one in 2021. more

  • What I will ask for as salary can be adjusted to fit the organizational salary structure.

You could say you’ll work for paid lunches

  • Before going to a job interview, you need to know what your bottom line is, in order words what you are worth. Otherwise, there will be an uneasiness... that can linger and impact your performance. Therefore doing some research before you go is important. You need to have a range for this type of job and you could also ask at the interview, the range they have as an organization for this position. The fact that they had to ask you couple times demonstrate that they were already dissatisfied about you not being able to give them a straight answer. You could have said also that you were expecting X amount but was ready and willing to consider an offer from them.  more

  • My dear brother, to me you are not at false. After you mentioned the salary you expect from the company to the manager, it is his or her duty to... clarify things to you about their salary range and if this latter meets your inner choice then you would conclude to start or not...
Most of the managers always keep in mind that many are there looking for job and if you don't accept their salary another person would come not knowing experience also counts. The employee in every minute also base on the experience, capacity and so forth... to mentioned the salary expected.

  • Very insightful responses 👏

  • When they ask “what is your rate?” I immediately ask “What is your budget?”

  • You have to bench mark your market position.
And add you personal request - Known yr value !

  • First, you should have stated the national average salary for the position (by doing research), and you're willing to work within the company's budget... set for that position. more

  • Assuming you did your research well on the ranges of similar positions, you can give the range caps (between this and this) while indicating you're... open for discussion in regard with what the company has on offer. I always take the question as a test to know one's knowledge of the market rates.  more

  • That's a very normal question for an interviewer to ask. It's a way for them to learn about you - how much research you did for one thing, and how you... value yourself. I've interviewed lots of candidates for jobs, and I've been the interviewee more times than I can count. The best way to answer the question is to say something like, "I think the range in the industry for positions like this one is between X and Y. Given my experience and what I would bring to this role, I'd hope to get something above the middle of the range." more

  • I had one recently as well. I made this comment, "I do have a number range in mind, however, everything is negotiable. What is the range that you have... for this role?"
Prior to doing so, I researched the company and the average salary for the title/position. This allowed me to have a range but I did not have to disclose because they came back to me.

  • A fair advert comes with the salary range with it

  • You could also told them that it was negotiable that way you don't burn yourself and you allow them to give their offer.

  • If that single question determines whether they hire you or not, they probably were looking for an opportunity to let you off...

  • "What do you think my skills, talents & years of experience are worth to your organization Mr. Smarty Pants Interviewer?"

  • For real. Granted, I have only aplied for jobs on the lower end of the pay scale, but I think i either knew beforehand what they paid or they would... have if I had asked. I have never been asked that question. And I have never heard of anybody being asked that question. My understanding is that they always make you an offer first. Most people just decide before they go if they are willing to do that job for that amount or not. If they really thank they have a skill or a reputation that is so in demand that it's a seller's market, for them, they might try to bargain their way up. But what they did sounds really sleazy. You are probably better off not working for them anyway. more
