I had a job interview, and at the end they asked me how much salary I expected. I didn’t give a clear answer at first, but they asked again two more times. When I finally said the highest amount I was hoping for, they told me I was too expensive for their company.
What should I have said instead?

  • Look at salary.com to get an idea of compensation and quote the number they published and follow up and ask in light of this statistical info on... salary.com, what is organization willing to offer within your budgeted allocation fir this position.  more

  • The the hirers were not professional. They were just looking for a flimsy excuse to drop candidates. There is no way one will know what the salary in... an organization is like from outside except an insider helps out. It is meant to be negotiated and anything short of that is a turn off for me. more

  • You should have scanned the salary structure in advance to give you some pictures of how much they pay for professionals of your grade. Then probably... you will be able to suggest appropriate salary for the job

  • The answer is....What would you pay someone with my experience. And repeat what experiences you are bringing to them

  • To quote Stan, "Assuming you did your research well on the ranges of similar positions, you can give the range caps (between this and this) while... indicating you're open for discussion in regard with what the company has on offer. I always take the question as a test to know one's knowledge of the market rates" more

  • It depends on where you are in the interview process. Salary expectations could be part of a screening interview, especially if the employers have... published their expectations, but it should not be part of your first proper interview. (It suggests the employer is looking for someone cheap.) In any case, you should have a reasonable expectation of how you would like to be remunerated before the interview (sometimes even before the application). If your expectations are reasonable and the employer is unwilling to meet it, then you probably avoided some misfortune. more

  • Very simple. I am willing to accept a salary within the budgeted range for this role.

  • Sometimes you need to have snapshot of the organizational policy, in any case others have the set salary scale like in most government institutions,... here apart from expectations, they would be testing your knowledge about the current wages in your country.

  • Some interviewers use this question to lay off people and I was advised to say....the appropriate salary the organization pays a person at my level .... Period. I don't know how true that is because I haven't been to any other job interview after having my first one in 2021. more

  • What I will ask for as salary can be adjusted to fit the organizational salary structure.

  • Before going to a job interview, you need to know what your bottom line is, in order words what you are worth. Otherwise, there will be an uneasiness... that can linger and impact your performance. Therefore doing some research before you go is important. You need to have a range for this type of job and you could also ask at the interview, the range they have as an organization for this position. The fact that they had to ask you couple times demonstrate that they were already dissatisfied about you not being able to give them a straight answer. You could have said also that you were expecting X amount but was ready and willing to consider an offer from them.  more

  • My dear brother, to me you are not at false. After you mentioned the salary you expect from the company to the manager, it is his or her duty to... clarify things to you about their salary range and if this latter meets your inner choice then you would conclude to start or not...
Most of the managers always keep in mind that many are there looking for job and if you don't accept their salary another person would come not knowing experience also counts. The employee in every minute also base on the experience, capacity and so forth... to mentioned the salary expected.

  • Very insightful responses 👏

  • When they ask “what is your rate?” I immediately ask “What is your budget?”

  • You have to bench mark your market position.
And add you personal request - Known yr value !

  • First, you should have stated the national average salary for the position (by doing research), and you're willing to work within the company's budget... set for that position. more
