My company offered me a promotion, but the expectation is that I'll be available 24/7. I have no problem working hard, but I don't want my phone controlling my life. Is there a way to negotiate this without losing the promotion?

  • It’s just work, if you need the promo, just be available and the only way that can happen is my being online and by your phone. So you either take or... drop the promo. more

  • You need to understand and weigh in , does my phone contribute much more to my gaols as compared to my job .Then develop a practical methodology to... help me detach from your phone obsession  more

  • Negotiate by asking when the 24/7 obligation exists. Those comments b4 mine are correct: you must clarify what type of job/career this is. If in the... health field, 24/7 is sometimes required, but limitations (lawful and legal) exist. It may be that your availability is every other day, or "on-call" certain days of the week. Start inquiring there and negotiate what works for your healthy boundaries and lifestyle. more

  • Could you further describe what the company means by "being available 24/7? Usually, this means in case of emergencies. If the expectation is... different from that, you need to get clarification and negotiate from there. You did not say if this position is exempt, or non-exempt status. If hourly, what would the pay differential be for 24/7 availability? more

  • Your question is vague. What type of work do you do? Would you be paid hourly or do you receive a salary? Most salaried workers I know are on call.... But that doesn't mean they are called excessively.
If you are a first responder, emergency service worker, news reporter it is understandable and expected.
Negotiate: 1) ask to accept the position with a probationary period, then make your decision; 2) ask if there is another promotion option. Tell them you are interested in advancement but your current off work situation will not support 24/7 access; or 3) decline the position outright. Good luck.

  • It is good you are aware your phone controls you, the best is to put yourself together and handle it ,

  • This looks like you are obsessed with your phone, call for a meeting with yourself and address the phone issue and move towards your heart.

  • It means the company will need your attention, that means your valuable. Consider it a sacrifice your making in your journey to success

  • I guess it depends on what the job is. I worked for years in the mental health field and the expectation was 24/7 availability by phone for emergency... client calls. Clients were organizations like first responders, banks, healthcare , and others. more
