Hi! I’m in my second week working as a fourth-grade teacher. So far, everything is fine, but all my colleagues feel sorry for me and warn me that the parents of my class have already forced two teachers to quit. I even feel like they’re betting on how long I’ll last. I hope I won’t have any conflicts, but could you give me some advice on what to pay attention to so that my relationships stay smooth going forward? Thanks in advance.

Begin by building a rapport with parents before a parent teacher night. You need to send out a mass text or email to your student's parents letting... them know you're the new teacher and how to contact you. Then establish a way for them to come into the classroom in the morning and see their child's progress like a starboard or chart for goals. You can also make sure they have some kind of book that they take home like a journal that has their progress on the inside of the composition notebook. Give each parent a copy of the curriculum for your classroom. Keep them informed and keep them empowered. more

  • My dear,
I was in education from "89" to 2020 and I worked in urban education as well as white suburban area schools. I left because I moved from... Milwaukee.
My advice to you is pray everyday because it's the way to live now days and secondly it sounds as though your school year is off to a good start. Do allow negative influence from anywhere cause anxiety nor the turn of your great start into a toxic experience.
Finally read the poem "If" by James Baldwin to yourself daily and share it as a tool with your students to create and maintain a positive environment in your classroom.
Have a wonderful and blessed school year..

  • You were hired because someone saw "the light in your eyes." As a first year teacher your focus should be on you and applying what you have learned... to your craft. Novice teachers should be assigned a Mentor. If you don't have one, ask your principal to assist in identifying someone to mentor you. You might also consider staying connected to the faculty in your teacher preparation program. I'm sure they want to know how well you are doing in your classroom. more

  • Hi Hannah,
Thanks for reaching out. Prayer changes thing. The Bible instructs us to pray about everything. I am a parent. I volunteer at Chicago... Public Schools for 15 years in the Special Education Department. Yes, some parents are off the hook. Lol. But stay calm. Assess the problem and then address the problem. Ask the parent what do they think is the answer? Have the parents come and volunteer in the classroom. Stay professional at all times!!!!! Your co-workers will be amazed at your reaction and how well you are getting along with the parents!!!

  • Stay positive and fix your eyes on professionalism, doing the right thing, avoid getting personal even if the parents show resentment.

  • Hi,
Do not listen to the negative comments. You were made for this; otherwise, I don't believe you would be in the classroom. Remember to build trust... with parents and students and be fair in your dealings. I don't know if you know God as your Lord and Savior, but trusting Him and having faith in His word will go a long way. more

  • Your colleagues should never have told you that. First I’d suggest staying out of the teachers’ lounge.
Personally, I think you should call the... parents of each of your students or send a group message via your school’s preferred app. Tell them why you’re a teacher, share an interest or passion you have that humanizes you. Tell parents that reading to their children is probably the most helpful thing they can do. Stay away from teachers who call students lazy or say parents don’t care.

  • My daughter is also a 4th grade teacher. She had challenges in another school with the culture in a particular school, so I'm not sure what might be... the bigger issue - the parents or the other teachers. She gets/ give a lot of support in a couple teacher Facebook groups. Are you in any of those? It might be helpful. more

  • Hi Hannah
It is perfectly normal to feel what you feel.
Be a resource to the parents so they can count on you and trust you.
I own a tutoring center... and the parents’ trust is the only currency I use!

  • Know your legal rights. Don’t mention charlie kirk. Get As much information as you can as to how/why the previous removals occurred.

  • Document everything. I used old fashioned telephone message pads with duplicate copies to send home so I had a record. I created a behavior/... homework/reading minutes chart for the parents to sign with attached notes. Each child was given their own folder with weekly calendar, spelling words and homework assignments. I would replace the calendar every week and keep a file of their child's performance and the parents oversight. Good luck. We need good teachers! It's the hardest job I've ever had. Laura  more

  • Thanks for for your concern about your relationship and its future.I wonder are a classroom teacher or the head teacher? The reason to why the two... teachers have gone is not clear here for you to be blamed after all you are only two weeks. Is your grade far above of the rest of the staff including the head teacher so that you are a threat. somewhere the Bible says O' lord teach me what I should do, it is us to see how we should handle the situation. You have not gone to that school to cause problems but to help in the development of it so check your character towards the other members of staff and the other stake holders  more
