Hello, I work at a small tourist base. In our village it’s hard to find a job, so everyone tries to get hired here. The pay isn’t much, but the main thing is that the manager has repeated three times in the past week that only loyal employees should be working here. Do you think layoffs or salary cuts are coming?

  • Doesn’t hurt to ask. I would also ask has something happened to make them think loyalty is a problem at this time? Loyalty is in short supply today,... how can I show I’m loyal to doing a great job? more

  • That may not be true. It may be a waring to an individual or group of individuals are under performing. It is a broad statement that if you are doing... your job and you have no performance issues I wouldn't worry to much more

  • He possibly playing with the minds of the workers to cue them to increase productivity and get motivated to work more,

  • The manager is trying to improve the performance of the company in one sense as well as maybe getting rid of some staff in another sense

  • Looking back on a 40 + years career in the private sector and government in Canada, the prospect of a "disruption" in employment was a constant. The... disruptions included salary freezes, reorganizations, downsizings, layoffs and organizational wind-up/bankruptcy. So one lived, worked, saved and planned accordingly.

The intriguing question in this case is, What is the definition of "loyal employees"?

  • I think the manager wants to see some energy and commitment and people who are willing to go that extra mile.
