My boss gave me a poor review after I refused to work on weekends. I don't have proof it was retaliation. If I challenge the review and lose, I could make my situation much worse. Would you fight it?
  • ... tell the truth. Some of her statements were based on lies and hearsay, and she always believed others over my word. I guess the perception of... reality and truth is so different in different people and different states of consciouesness. And one can't fight it. People need to grow up spiritually - to a higher level of honesty, with themselves and with others. more

  • I had a boss who wrote bad reviews on me almost every Friday. I would go back home in tears. Finally I asked her: Am I really that bad. Why do you... always write about me? You are singling me out. You don't pay that much attention to other workers. Then my husband helped me understand that my spritual believes where not in agreement with the politics at my work and it would be good for me to reitre earlier. He helped me and as soon as our budget was good ( we paid off our mortage ) I retired. And I am very happy. I know, every one's situation is different and most of my life I had to work and suffer " injustice and bad bosses " - but these were my spiritual lessons, sometimes of paying off karma from past lives, sometimes a lesson of building strenght and detachment . The last job, my husband asked me: why do you react. Stop reaciting and she will eventually stop writing you up. I did ... at the very end. When I knew I would retire soon. Before that I always tried to explain, tell the  more

  • on what basis did he write the review? if you can have backup from the your colleagues you can challenge the review.

  • What kind of Job
    are we talking about?

  • Are you sure that the evaluation was lower than you expected for the reason you are sharing with us? What is your trade and where do you work, if it... is in the USA and you are at management level, you may be on duty 24/7, and if you are in EU , we'll, you don t really have to work, you are protected, just take it easy and call sick for a couple weeks like everyone! more

  • It's so contextual. Some jobs require occasional weekend work and those that refuse are going to be deemed less valuable, less reliable, and less... team oriented. If working weekends is anathema to you, then you likely need to find a different job -- one where it is spelled out front in granite that weekends are off limits. I don't think a lower evaluation is by definition wrong, but again the context is critical. If you were led to believe that weekends are sacred then you might have a case, but you would need something to support your position. more

  • I would challenge the review but before you do go to EEOC and create a retaliation claim to cover your job first.

  • Most performance reviews provide an opportunity for you to add comments. If you truly believe the evaluation is inaccurate, the question should not... be, **“Should I fight it?”** The better question is, **“How do I clearly document that the evaluation does not accurately reflect my performance?”**

Use the process available to you before assuming the review is retaliation. Start by providing specific information that demonstrates where your performance differs from what is reflected in the evaluation.

I would recommend submitting a written comment explaining why you disagree with the review. Be factual and specific. Include accomplishments from throughout the review period, such as projects you completed, deadlines you met, goals you achieved, positive feedback you received, or other examples that support your position.

If working overtime was cited as an issue, review the applicable policy to determine whether overtime is actually a requirement of your position.

  • Good that you are anonymous. In my case, I can say with confidence that some people become bosses not by hard work, but by networking like spiders.

  • some people are just not worth it. Any other place?

  • some battles are not worth the fight, let it go, and leave the rest to God

  • This sounds pretty murky. They never mentioned the work could be on weekends? You never mentioned that you couldn’t and documented it. They never... confirmed that that was ok? They didn’t give you the reasons your evaluation was poor? I have worked in management and these are all basic things you should be encountering. I literally had employees who wanted to challenge the reason there were getting poor reviews even though they were notified of infractions warned witnessed and documented. I fired an employee after giving multiple chances and he became belligerent and went to my boss who promptly told him he was the reason he was getting fired and that I was trying to keep him. The point is your story is missing details and if the environment is really that inept you should leave. But make sure you’re not the problem.  more

  • If your Boss has reasonable supporting documentation for his evaluation, I suggest you ask him to help you improve. This might prove beneficial in... several ways especially in future evaluations.  more
