Any tips for facing what I believe to be age discrimination? I am over 60. I've had 3 interviews, none of the intervewsees were over 35 (max), and I heard nothing after the interview, despite being told they would contact me. All the interviews have been virtual. Any advice if it is age discrimination?

Here's a tip. After the interview, when the employer ask you if you have any questions for us, you ask, I want to ensure that my skills and experience... align well with the role. Can you tell me more about how the company values diversity and inclusion, including age diversity, in its hiring process?
This question accomplishes a few things:
    - It subtly brings up the topic of diversity and inclusion without directly accusing anyone.
    - It gives the interviewer a chance to discuss their company's policies and values.
    - It can reveal their stance on age diversity indirectly.

  • It's not your age. Your working with people young and older. You have to chose discretionary. Jobs, workplaces .

  • No age discrimination, everyone over 45 is in the same boat. This is the easier than having to decipher how works in cyberspace.

  • Working for others and working for yourself is different, entirely different...ask yourself what is your mindet is tuned for in these many years and... go by what it is saying....be an employer rather being an employee even after 50+  more

  • When I retired from the government, I went to a temporary agency. They sent me to a credit union. The manager in the department that was hiring... was older and she wanted someone older. I was 64 years young and she said younger generations will not work like a seasoned worker. I been there for 10 years. Put the Lord in front of you and if it's His will, thy will be done. He will place you where He want you to be. There is age discrimination in the work force. more

  • I can't help you. I am 58 and was offered 4 jobs since I started looking last November. Plus a job in November that didn't work out for other... reasons. I've never experienced ageism only heard about age discrimination from what I've read more

  • I wish I knew. I am 59 and was just told I was overqualified for a position that 1) asked for someone with experience and 2) wanted someone they could... mold and mentor. more

  • I see a lot of posts about age discrimination and I believe that to be true. I have known quite a few people very qualified in their professions and... after 70 could not find a job. People can say what they want, maybe half of these are not 60 so they have no clue. I know when they see 20 years of employment obviously that’s an indicator of age because I apply and get turned down as soon as I submit a resume and I had my resume professionally done with AI  more

  • Without more information I’m not sure it’s fair to assume age discrimination.

Did you follow up the interview with a thank you email, preferably... directly to the interviewer(s)?

Was there any discussion of when you should expect to hear from them? If all the interviewer says is “we’ll contact you” make sure you ask follow up questions regarding the timing, communication method, and from whom you should expect the communication. If you don’t hear back in the timeframe stated, I would reach out for an update.

  • Depends on the type of job you are applying for, I don't think if that is discrimination

  • FYI, in Colorado it is illegal for a prospective employer to ask for your age or date of birth

  • All hiring is discriminatory. They NEED to discriminate between the suitable and the unsuitable, and then from the suitable, the ones that they... assess would perform well from those who wouldn't "fit" so well, and so often (especially with cronyism, nepotism, or vibe-ism) they are massively wrong but it keeps happening because patriarchy. Unfortunately for marginalized candidates, "they" tend to relate best in an interview to candidates who look like them, making the performance data a self fulfilling prophecy. I have an anecdote about equally qualified male & female (same age)who were hired at the same time. The male received water cooler mentoring, drinks with the boys, etc. etc. The female got none of that. Unsurprisingly, given zero support, she failed. See? Women can't handle this job. There's not much you can do about it. A 30 something male manager will never say, "I didn't hire so & so because they don't look like me."  more

  • Yes I agree but sometimes you will be lucky to have the Manager with the same Country….I will tell the truth here in my company the General Manager... and Production Manager are the one who hired their countryman even they already on their age to retire. We have the luckiest people now and they want to replace 27 years in service onward for free! more

  • My advise is keep stepping forward, stay spiritually focused and control what you can control. Create your own way…..

  • Don’t forget and race discrimination. I have applied for countless positions since 2017….no success only one or two interviews. This is after over 30... years as an educator and performance artist. My qualifications are impeccable , even now at age 75. As an African American male I’m not surprised at anything that goes on in this country. Yes, I’m profoundly qualified.  more
