Hey! I had two interviews at the same company and both seemed to go fine. But then their HR person called and said they’re not moving forward with me because of a couple of my social media posts. Apparently they think I look “inappropriate” in them (even though there’s honestly nothing like that).
So I’m wondering, is this even normal? Photos from a party are my own business. Why does a company think it gets a say in my personal life?

They don't get a say in your personal life but they do get a say in who represents their company. Your posts may not line up with their ethics. Do... your photos include cocktails, revealing clothes, or obscene gestures? Or, you could be friends with someone Management doesn't like. Unfortunately, you may never know the real reason.
And remember, it's not private or personal once you post it.

  • Well my friend, they don’t get a say in your personal life which in my book is discrimination. Anything apart of obvious hate/harm speech or posts is... protected. Talk to their HR director & alert them that appropriate action will be taken against the firm if the reason for not being selected is properly defined. For all you know, it was an action caused by an HR team member who might have some personal bias against your history.
Stay loyal to yourself because on the other side of the coin, you’ll be sacrificed when they need to regroup.

    BTW: 2 points!
1: you mention two job interviews? Were they at the same company?
2: Rarely are candidate given reasons why they were not selected. There are selected responses used I.e. We decided to offer to another candidate.

  • everything we post on social medias are our own business, but when we post them they are no longer private they become public to society.

  • business also build a good reputation (good image) through their workers, employers are also the best ambassadors of the business.

  • Yeah, unfortunately this happens more than you’d think. Companies often check social media to get a sense of how someone might represent them, even if... it feels unfair. It’s frustrating because your personal life is your own, but sometimes they see it differently. Definitely not a reflection of your professionalism it’s just their policy or perception. more

  • You really have to consider that this just another way to determine who the best fit is. And if you’re posting about your private life, it’s not so... private anymore. So anyone who looks you up will find the same information they did. They know their long term plans for their role and anything that can come up in a background check, within guidelines, or on social media is fair for scrutiny. You should be thankful they told you what they passed on you.  more
