I accidentally saw a spreadsheet showing salaries, and I'm earning much less than coworkers with similar responsibilities. Do I admit how I found out, or focus only on market rates?

  • Be ready to go if they say no. If you don't have anything better then you might as well not compare to others in the conversation. Just ask generally... speaking. If you bring up facts or get aggressive after a no and you stay they know they got you. Atleast until you can find better more

  • Yes. Ask for the raise & site your current duties and the cost of living right now. If they say yes and offer you something too low you’ll need to... negotiate. You have to have your own back 😁 Best of luck you deserve it. more

  • In your comment you do not disclose if your efficiency, contributions, experience, tenure etc. are equivalent to your peers making a higher salary. ... Having similar responsibilities is not always the same as having similar or equivalent outputs. more

  • Another strategy might be this: (I have used this my entire career without fail)
Tell your boss: "I just want you to know that I will never come to... you asking for a raise. I believe it is your responsibility to make sure I am fairly and competitively compensated for my work. This way I do not need to answer those headhunting calls and if I ever feel I am underpaid for the contributions I make to this firm, my letter of resignation will be on your desk." more

  • Having seen this information, you have the following questions to answer yourself:
    1. Am I going to do anything about this or just get used to the... fact that I'm paid less than others?
    2. Do I draw up a battle plan to assess myself against others at my level and go for a raise or do I plan my exit?
    3. Do I leverage the fact that I have seen this information or keep that fact to myself? If I choose to leverage it, how and with whom?
    4. Does the degree of insincerity and contempt for workers that this information reveals tell me I made a mistake coming to work here or would I do the same thing if I were in their shoes?

Once all three questions are answered sincerely, move forward immediately.

No company is going to pay anybody one dime more than they have to. If they can get a steal of a deal on your smarts and hard work, they will. Business has no morality. Never has.

  • That shows the dishonesty in the entire company and probably this maybe affecting the image of the company

  • I found out when my manager forwarded me an email from HR that specifically said not to share with employees, and all the men were making... significantly (like 20k+) more than the women, and I had much more experience and depth of skills. I took it with me to HR, and go figure, I got a significant raise.  more

  • You should destroy what you got and notify from it came.

  • Gather what you offer and how well you do your job and then ask for your rate. If you’re worth what they are worth you’ll get it. If you’re not they... will tell you no. From there you make a decision to better and do better or leave.  more

  • The exact same thing happened to me many years ago. Do know there are several factors that go into salary discussion to include employment rate,... experience, skills etc. If you are going to address your salary expectations, present your skills/experiences and your goals. Focus on it from that instance. When it happened to me, that fueled me to find a job payment me what I was worth. Best of luck.  more

  • Instead of comparing your salary with others probably at the same level, improve on yourself and be more valuable to the organization. By so doing,... you stand a better chance to apply for salary review. more

  • There are several factors that may be considered, like how long other employees has been there, your geographic location has alot do do with it also.... You see their pay work hard and get yours upthere too, you see it's possible. more

  • Accidentally? Sounds like you held it and flipped pages depending on how long the document was. Regardless, salaries will always vary. Focus on your... development. You are not going to get the same salary as someone else for doing similar roles and you’ve been there 3 years and they have been there 8 years. Thats not to say you can’t advocate for yourself about pay equity. Focus on performance and what you are doing, how your goals are measured and what KPI are aligned that you consistently meet. more

  • I wouldnt bring up the other employees rate at all. I would focus on what I do and bring to the table. And keep it very fact based and unemotional. ... I wish you luck. One last thing. Youre always worth more on the open market. People pay for talent. I dont know if your situation is a case of this but incoming people often make more than tenured people. So if you dont feel whatever you ultimately end up with is in line with your talent, you should at the very least, test the market. I did this and within 4 years double my salary.  more

  • Please note that there are many salary scale generating system, those system considers level of education, years of experience, and international... languages you speak, you may be a diploma holder and the other degree but yet you find yourselves having the same salary scale due to experience, and sometimes a person of diploma earns more due to his experience. When you want to raise such issues consider those facts. more

  • I did too. They refused to adjust mine and I left. 6 months later, it wound up! Not because of me if course but karma😆
