Hey everyone! I’m a mom on maternity leave. I’ve been home for a year already. My job was expecting me to come back on March 1, but I’m pregnant again and told them I’m going on maternity leave again, so I won’t be returning yet.
They said I can stay home for 4 more months and then that’s it, otherwise they’ll fire me.
Is that even allowed? Can they fire someone who’s pregnant and on maternity leave? Thanks!

    Hello 👋

I would like to congratulate you. I am truly proud of you, and I must say you have done very well.

Please understand that your workplace is... an organization, and as such, they need to continue operating smoothly. They rely on their staff to keep things moving forward, and it may be difficult for them to accommodate another year of absence. For the business to grow and progress, they need active participation from their team.

In light of this, I would kindly advise that you consider resigning for now, so you can focus fully on taking care of the babies. When the time is right, you can always return to work. This allows the organization to continue functioning without stagnation while also giving you the space you need at this important stage.

They value you and your role, but unfortunately, your unavailability for another year makes it challenging for them to plan effectively.

  • You are a true believer!! Go.....produce and fill the world. How I wish the next pregnancy are triplets or quadruplets because it seem you pay more... attention to manufacturing more children than valuing your job more

  • Yes, they can. And you cant just decide to stay home another year. Do you have Drs orders or a documented medical reason to be home during this... current pregnancy?
Paid or unpaid Maternity leave (ML) is for after you give birth. You have 1 baby and 1 year of ML. Being pregnant does not equal ML. Go back to work until you deliver your next baby. Then you can go back out on ML.
If you want to be a stay at home mom, quit and stay home. Stop taking up space on the roles and preventing your employers from filling the spot and getting work done.
As others have stated, you should read your employee manual.

  • Well they can't fire you while you are on leave, but they don't have to hold your job. (At least not in the US Private Sector) What this means is that... when you come back, you will most likely have a different role. However, from what you are saying I would plan my exit strategy and find a remote role that will allow you to work part time and still have benefits. I am in the process of building several businesses, and I plan to offer generous packages to my employees. Tell me more about what you do and what kind of work you would be interested in. more

  • Congratulations, these things happens when least expected and one become a subject for criticism. But it is good to mind others too.

However, there... are other ways to get income when you are stay home mums and mums and dads who strive to have time with their kids in their critical stages.

  • Of course they can because you have proved to your employer that you have settled for another opportunity "Mothers Hood". Its not their business model... to enhance your bloodline within their profit margin. They helped once and that was above and beyond.  more

  • I was back at work as early as my Dr let me only because I had to, but I wasn't getting paid for maternity leave! And they gave you a year? And now... you want more? This is what is wrong with the world. All entitlement with no effort, we have all lost the concept of gratitude be grateful for what they have given you and just think, there are people like me who work up until our water breaks and before our miniscule 6 weeks is even up ( and that's Dr orders, without pay). Why should they continue to pay you for nothing?  more

  • Hello Monica
I understand your dilemma. But let us look at it from your boss’s viewpoint. They have a service to provide. When you go for a short... period of time they try to make do with temps. That is not ideal. If you want to stay out another year, they have to get a replacement. When you want to come back, if you do, they have to let go of this interim employee. That is not fair to this new employee.
You have already made your choice. If you wanted, you could have returned for 6 months or so and then tried for another maternity leave.
When you are ready to come back, the company would probably love to hire you if they have an opening and your work has been good.
Enjoy your time and worry about returning when you are ready. Between this company and others, you should be able to land on your feet.
    Good Luck

  • As an Hr practitioner, i do not have kind words for you at all because you are not serious; you are given 1yr of maternity and again you want more... time for leave and you want to continue enjoying their benefits without value for money; so you want th e company to continue paying you for no work at all; i kindly suggest you resign and focus on your babies when you are ready to resume you will look for the company or else where. Never take your BOSSES or COMPANIES that employ us for Granted they endure alot to look for the businesses inorder to keep us upfloat with the luxuries we need more

  • Congrats upon your child birth success and family progress at large. However, I want to believe that maternity leave takes effect only after an... employee gives birth (as the case is in Uganda) so I am thinking they are right to recall you back to work till such a time your deliver another baby.
Otherwise, if any punitive action is taken against you so long as it's guided by the company HR policy, they won't be at fault as that's the working tool guiding their decision making. I therefore implore you to consult the organization's HR manual to help you help your self.

  • With all this time that your off from work why don’t you just start your own business that works for you while your having babies.

  • Jobs dont own you and you dont own the job… so do what you need to do as they will do the same

  • Looks like you are on an unpaid maternity leave. You were not counting on a salary, if it was only for the benefits. You can use COBRA that will... extend your benefits. If you don't need benefits, why are you even holding down to a job that someone can really use. more
