My coworkers regularly stay online until 8–9pm, even though our official hours end at 5. I leave on time and still meet every deadline. Now I'm worried I'm being perceived as lazy. Should I start staying late just to fit in?

  • No. Bottom line if you are getting your assigned work done there is no need for you to stay late. If your evaluation reflects that you don't stay... late, question where not staying late has affected your performance.  more

  • An after hours work event should not be mandatory. You typed "Now I'm worried. I'm being perceived as lazy". Are these your words? Has anyone in... authority called you that or said anything? If not, don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself. If yes, they should put it in writing and allow you time to respond. They haven't so why worry?  more

  • I wouldn’t start staying late simply for the sake of appearances, especially if you’re consistently meeting your deadlines and producing quality work.... There’s an important difference between being productive and simply being visible.

That said, workplace culture can influence how people perceive commitment, so it may be worth paying attention to whether those late hours are actually expected or whether coworkers have simply developed that habit. If you’re concerned, a conversation with your manager about your performance and expectations could provide some clarity.

Commitment should ultimately be measured by the quality and consistency of your work—not by how long your online status stays green.

  • I empathize with such culture. Being judged for leaving work on time, while you meet your deadlines. I suggest you maintain course, if it kills anyone... inside, it is on them. You do your work. And I would suggest to work harder on yourself - personal ventures, to give yourself some leverage. more

  • The fact that you're able to meet up with deadlines while maintaining an official clock out time sign out defines you already. Don't be too hard on... yourself; remember that you do not need validation from anyone to be the best version of yourself.
Just do you thing and let your result speak for you.
