Hello! I just finished my probation period, and I’m really happy that I was taken on as staff.
But a couple of days ago, I found out that I’m pregnant. How do I tell my boss about it now?
They’ll probably fire me…

  • Inform your boss professionally and positively. Kenyan Employment Act protects against dismissal and grants 3 months’ maternity leave (Section 29).

  • You need to approach your supervisor as soon as possible to share this new development, it will help the company in planning for your roles and... responsibilities. I don't know the kind of industry your are in, otherwise your fear is right, companies put a lot of resources in recruiting and developing a new staff and pregnancy comes with a lot of body and attitude changes which can affect your job performance. more

  • No need to worry.. In fact just celebrate that God has blessed you with 3 things,A confirmation after probation, Pregnancy and soon you will be... enjoying your Maternity leave full blast.Cheers dear  more

  • Wouldn't tell him until I was about 5 months

  • As far as I know it's illegal to fire you.

  • So many unknowns here, but you are already defensive (They’ll probably fire me…) Relax, celebrate and trust God.
Do consider your work environment,... job description, and your employer’s position. For example, is heavy lifting one of your tasks?
Also, a word of caution about co workers who could mislead or increase your anxiety.
When ready, hopefully you will know your job better and the people for whom you work to best plan an announcement.
By the way, you do not want to stay where your baby is not welcome, laws or no laws. I have been there.
    So, have a Plan B

  • Congratulations on job and baby. did you sign any document not to be pregnant during this period? if not, it's not your fault, especially if your... status was "married" at the time of employment. talk to your supervisor, "full disclosure" but let him/her know you are committed to doing your best during this period and pray for favor from God, your boss and management. Everything should work together for good for you. I wish you the best! more

  • It's illegal for them to fire you because you are pregnant.
Under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, or PDA, employers can't fire or discriminate... against employees simply because they're pregnant. The PDA is an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and is enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or EEOC. more

  • Go to your supervisor and tell them that you are pregnant and seek their advice on who you need to talk with. If you have a company handbook read it... before talking to them that may take some pressure off of. Then follow up with their advice..G Luck

  • You dont need to say anything yet its too early.

  • I would wait a bit and check out what your compensation is with the company. Do they offer maternity, how did maternity look for other employees, etc.... I have been in the same situation and it is stressful. Transparency is important but companies can be heartless towards women who are pregnant. You need to take care of yourself and taking small steps isn't a bad thing. If a company wants to fire you for taking maternity, in the long run they are a crappy company.  more

  • Is it a permanent or contractual job?

  • Congratulations on completing your probation and on the pregnancy. What is the policy for maternity?. Can you find out more and pick the brains of ... other people who have been there concerning the issue. At the end of the day transparency is key. more
