As a boss, some things really infuriate me. I have had a vacancy in my department for at least 3 months. i am a CDM and i run a kitchen in a 40 bed skilled Nursing Facility. People have applied, interviewed, and consented to background xheck and taken their TB test. However when it come time for orientation so we can schedule them to start, they dont answer the phone. several people have done rhis. Even more have applied ser an interview date and time and never showed up. Can anyone tell me why? The knew the pay rate and rhe days and hours required and still went through rhe process. I and my cook are being stretched rhin as we are the only 2 cooks in the facility. My facility refuses to use a staffing company for rhe kitchen. what am I going ro do besides quit.

Where are you sourcing candidates from? When you say "people" have started then abandon the process: how many people (roughly)? Are you making job... announcements through your state's Employment Development Department as well? If you aren't doing so already, it could provide access to a greater pool of applicants who are not "time wasters." There's obviously other internal and external variables that we probably can't cover here.  more

  • I worked for an airline and we had great benefits (not necessarily the pay). It most definitely was not the management, it was the fact that many... people did not want to work early or late hours. I think there are not as many people motivated to earn a paycheck these days more

  • Are you still hiring? I have a family member looking for a job asap. Please share the information if possible. Solutions!

  • They got a better offer elsewhere? Make it worth their while, maybe readjust your pay rate 😱

  • sounds to me like the job is something no one wants. if people that want to work come in, go through the interview, and then ghost you - either you... have a personality they don't want to deal with, or the job has issues they don't want to deal with.
And - much as you don't want to hear this - it's probably you. people don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers.

  • Whatever you have been doing to locate applicants, do something else. Whatever you have been doing is attracting low quality applicants. You will have... to spend more money all around to recruit the high quality (will actually show up for work) people that you're looking for.

Have you considered connecting with your state's Workforce Development Office?

    Good luck!

  • Hi what are the hours and rate of pay and where is it located

  • It's so frustrating to see employers in need of employees and some people are unemployed in some countries and they can travel for more than 10hrs... just for an interview which they're not even sure if they will get the job but they still travel for the interview anyway and they don't complain.  more

  • For some people working in a nursing home (even in the kitchen is difficult). Don't lose hope and be sure person is right for the job before you... even go that far in the process. I do visitations in nursing homes and many of my friends have said they do not like to go. Oh, and lastly don't forget your seniors who are still looking for part time work. Seniors have excellent work ethics. And work with them not hover over your employees. Let them know you are all part of the team more

  • In these days and times people really don't want to work. We go through the same thing at my facility. People will come and do orientation maybe work... a week or two then don't come back, or like you say never show. Its crazy more

  • I imagine the applicants could undertaking this same tedious process with other prospective employers. The others might be outbidding you. Is there... any budgetary room for higher compensation?

Also, if this process is causing difficulty for you, maybe you could ask for a raise to cope with the added burden. Good luck.

  • Also, keep in mind the work and overall living climate is sensitive these days, and some of the candidates whom you are connecting with may have other... government concerns occupying their attention. more

  • Sad to say but there's an epidemic of this behavior. I had a friend who spent $100K building a small restaurant kitchen. Trainees would come in work... a week, maybe two and just disappear. The restaurant never opened . Have you tried reaching out to training schools where trainees can eanr apprentice ship hours needed for graduation and also be paid while they work? A friend worked for an organization, CEO, that helped people coming out of incarceration with job placement. They need and want to work. Perhaps reaching out to helping to less conventional organizations is a route to explore. more

  • Honestly. With all due respect. It sounds like you need to practice patience and understanding. The energy you’re giving here is very high and... negative. Most def spell check things as well, bc it shows your frustrations, which is a you problem, not an everyone problem. When you do things in patience you will find out things will work out a lot better. At the end of the day, all staffing issues stem from the owner/boss. Happy workers = Happy everyone/smooth running business.

Take a step back, look in the mirror and reassess, separate and fix things. Good luck and take your time.
