I’m on a trial period at work and I’m not sure if I want to stay at this company. Our workday ends at 7 PM and I go home on time. But my coworkers don’t understand why I don’t stay late. They say I’m not interested in the company and that I don’t care about my job.
I honestly don’t understand, are they jealous or do they just want to control me?

That’s a guilt trip because the environment is toxic. Look for a new job and be silent until you say goodbye.

  • Honestly, leaving at the time your workday officially ends shouldn’t be a problem. If your shift ends at 7 PM and you’ve done your work, going home on... time doesn’t mean you’re not interested in the company. Sometimes in workplaces there’s this unofficial culture where people feel they have to stay late to “look dedicated.” When someone chooses not to follow that pattern, others may interpret it the wrong way. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re jealous or trying to control you, it might just be what they’re used to, so they expect everyone else to do the same. What really matters is whether you’re doing your job well. If your tasks are done and your manager is satisfied with your performance, that’s what counts most. Coworkers’ opinions can be loud, but they’re not the ones deciding whether you pass your trial period. At the same time, since you’re still new, it might help to pay attention to the company culture. Som places genuinely value work-life balance, while others quietly dont.

  • Most private institutions careless about work and life balance.i worked in a company where we resume work by 8am and no closing time and no overtime... payments but u there not come to work late the next day. more

  • You need to have a work life balance. If your productive hours have yielded the days expected output . Don't mind on what others say.

  • It sounds like this company has developed a culture that encourages staff to display their commitment to their job through visibility rather than... delivery. You need to decide if this is the kind of culture you want to participate in. Understand this is only going to entrench you in this culture after your probation, and if you get offered the position. This is a prime opportunity for you to decide if this is the kind of working environment you want or not. Remember, inasmuch as they are evaluating you, you need to be evaluating them for fit. You have every right to decline an offer of continued employment if you feel this is not a culture you wish to participate in, because they will be doing the same to you. You leaving at the end of the workday is not going unnoticed, so if you are already getting messages that suggest you don't care or are not interested in the company, you can probably deduce a few things from that already. more

  • May I ask what work/industry are you in?

  • You are on probation and I am sure that on your contract shift hours were stipulated. You follow your contract and do not listen to colleagues and... only stay for extra hours when instructed by a superior who will tell you the reason for working late. Remember your contract is your guideline not your colleagues. Also note that staying until late does not always mean that people are hard workers but employees slacking off during office hours. Do your work accordingly and knock off as per stipulation. more

  • Why are you entertaining what they say? Work hard, leave on time. Worry when your lead/ supervisor says something directly to you.

  • Try to be patience may be there is reasons for that you just stay calm and positive every day no matter what comes on your way.

  • I worked at a Japanese bank. It didn't matter how many hours I put in. People were upset if you left early. One day I had to give notice. I don't... care to make a business rich when I had a little one at home. Focus on working somewhere where a balance is valued.  more

  • Im familiar with this type of toxic environment. Your colleagues are slacking off during office hours and pretend to be busy. The employees come in... on time, chat till about midday, work till lunch for 2 hrs instead of 1hr. They work but chat more upto 1hr to end of shift so stay longer to look very committed. You are on probation. To be confirmed, hr, whoever, will consider their input for your confirmation - they make ask how well they work with you? So for now stay late and accomodate them. Immediately you are confirmed, speak to HR and tell them they would benefit from installing camera's in the office - PROBLEM SOLVED!!!  more

  • Get your probationary period first, then when you are legitimately a team member have that conversation on what exactly is expected of you.
This... depends also if you are salaried, hourly and/or commission based! No Fear!
Remember Work Life Balance! Because no one’s last words on this Earth has even been “I should have spent more time at the office!”

  • YEAH your Co-Workers/ Co-Associates DON'T write the paychecks that you need to pay your bills🚫 go to your upper chain of command (your supervisors or... direct corporate managers like the Human Resources Department Management) or just find another (J.O.B) 👍 more

  • Ask your supervisor what should be done at this point. Since you are in a trial period (assuming probationary period, I would ask a superior anytime... you are unclear. Remember, co-workers are there to train but it's best to go to your chain of command. more

  • If the work ends at 7 why do they want you to stay longer? For what reasons? As who?

  • Note that your coworkers are not your employer. what comments has so far been made by your employer? Remember staying late has a cost implication to... the employer if it is for production reason. So, what does staying late entail? more
