I know my company is underpaying me, but my manager has personally supported me through some difficult times and helped me get the job. I feel disloyal asking for more money. Am I confusing gratitude with loyalty?

  • I think gratitude and fair compensation can absolutely coexist. You can genuinely appreciate a manager who supported you while still recognizing that... your skills, experience, and contributions have value.

Asking for appropriate compensation isn’t being disloyal—it’s advocating for yourself professionally. I’d approach the conversation with appreciation rather than resentment: acknowledge the support you’ve received, explain the value you bring, and have a respectful discussion about compensation.

Gratitude shouldn’t require you to undervalue yourself.
