I really love reading and I want to get a job in a library or a bookstore. But my family doesn’t understand this at all, they say it’s a waste of time. On top of that, they say libraries don’t pay much.
But spending my days without reading is boring for me. And all my relatives are pushing hard for “career growth.” How can I explain it to them in a way that makes them stop trying to convince me otherwise?
Thanks

I agree with your family. Your love for reading can be extended in many directions. Scientists read, teachers read, professors read, doctors read,... researchers read, writers and authors read, dancers and performers read.

Getting a job in a book store can be a temporary way to make cash will fulfilling an interest. But it wouldn't be wise to see it as a longer term path or career choice unless you plan on opening a your own bookstore !

Stay in school and good luck on your journey.

  • considen your family frist, befour you think about your job okay.

  • Career development and studying arent mutually exclusive. You can work as you still do it. After all, as a certain prof puts it, the aim of knowledge... isn't filling the bucket, but igniting a flame. Focus on the career as you continue studying. After all, knowledge is a tool, a means to an end, and not an end. You need to make a living, pay bills. Etc. It should work for you. more

  • Reading the books can't be the reason to take this job. It is highly unlikely that you will have a time for reading while working. You need to have a... better reason for that. If you think that you will like it, then go. Try and see for yourself. Why not? You will have experience and noone can say that you jave to do that until the rest of your life. more

  • I also agree with your family. Like you, I'm an avid reader and chose to train as a librarian. It was something of a shock to discover how seldom... reading came up. I hadn't grasped then that a librarian's chief purpose is to connect library users with information, not to share what is in books. So, nobody cared how well read we were. What mattered was how efficiently we could help people find materials. If your happiness and your sanity depend on doing a lot of reading, I would look into professions that use reading more, such as perhaps research or teaching. For myself, although I didn't regret the skills we learned in the library, I eventually found teaching to be a better fit and ended up pursuing that. But no one should end up mired in a career that doesn't "sing" to them. If you have access to a vocational counselor, it might be good to sit down and get some feedback from them about the type of work they see you in. If you are still determined to pursue library work, it might be good to ask a staff member at your local library what skills they use most in their workday, and how much reading plays a part in it. Good luck and good hunting! more

  • Who pays your bills? How much does your peace of mind matter to you? Why do adults care so much about what other adults think? Look at their lives,... their choices and actions. Are they living out their advice? Have they never made a decision based on their own beliefs? more

  • What you feeling is completely valid. Loving reading and wanting to be around books is not a weakness or a waste of time. The real challenge here... isn’t your dream it helping your family understand it in their language.Your family may see reading as “just enjoyment.” You need to show the value.

Explain that working in a library or bookstore builds:

    Communication skills

    Research and information management skills

    Organization and responsibility

    Customer service and professionalism

    Strong language and writing ability

    You can say.

“Reading has helped me think better, speak better, and learn faster. A library or bookstore job uses these skills every day.

  • I worked in a library and it was the most horrible job I ever had! You cannot "read" on the job and the customers are rude and the libraries filthy... (libraires have a limited cleaning budget) more

  • It is my understanding that in as much as we would want to emphasize on pursuing our passions we should not neglect the primary responsibility of... taking care of ourselves which rests on self reliance. What your family is simply reminding you is for you not to neglect your primary responsibility: taking care of yourself. From where I stand reading is not a profession. Maybe you can pursue a profession which encompasses reading as a skill for example becoming an editor for a magazine or a newspaper. Mind reading can appear as a skill on resumes of many other professionals. It can be a hobby for many professions. Just pursue a career that lets you exploit your skills to the fullest. more

  • Your Family loves you productive they do not want you to mediocre in life. I am avid reader but employed as a MEAL officer and as I write this, I am... here reading 'A song of Achilles' for my holiday. So reading is in no means an impediment to getting a serious job.  more

  • You have to do what makes you whole. Getting a career based solely for the money will slowly erode your soul. Trust me on this.
