I was offered a 40% raise, but the new job would mean losing my remote flexibility and adding almost two hours of commuting every day. I'm struggling to decide whether the money is worth giving up that much of my life.

  • A 40% raise is certainly significant, but I think it’s important to look beyond the salary and consider the total cost of the opportunity. Two hours... of commuting every day could easily add up to 10 hours a week—time that you currently have for family, personal interests, or simply enjoying life.

I’d compare not only the additional income, but also commuting expenses, benefits, career growth, work environment, and how much you personally value the flexibility you have now. Sometimes a higher salary represents a genuine step forward; other times, once you factor in the time and lifestyle changes, the increase isn’t quite as large as it initially appears.

Compensation matters, but your time has value too—and unlike money, you can’t earn more of it.

  • Money is not everything. I commuted 3 hours daily for 10 years. I had 2 hip replacements. Stay remote
