Hi, can someone help me with breathing exercises to calm down? I get really nervous before interviews and don’t know how to relax.

  • Breathing solely through the left nostril will calm you down ... even 3 mins can do it. You just need to close off your right nostril with either... your right index finger or thumb and then inhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril; then exhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril. Continue breathing SOLELY through the left nostril. The left side of the body is associated with the moon, with calming and cooling energy. A regular practice of breathing solely through the left nostril has even helped lower blood pressure in some! I used to get extremely nervous testifying before state and federal legislatures. There were many times I was sitting in the back of a taxicab with my thumb or index finger closing off my left nostril 'cause I knew that would calm me down. Again, three minutes (approx 26 inhales & exhales) can do wonders! You could do this for 10-15 mins, too; like I used to do in the back of those taxicabs!! more

  • This qi gong method will give you fast and effective results if practiced 30 mins a day divided into three 10 min sessions . Simply sit on a chair,... back straight but relaxed. Close eyes and mouth. Focus on the breath moving in and out of your nostrils. Begin to soften the breath as you inhale a feeling of relaxation and exhale a feeling of letting go. Relax on the breath in, let go of all tensions and stress on the breath out. Continue to relax and let go deeper with each breath until the relaxation saturates your entire being during inhalation and all mental, emotional and physical stress is released during exhalation. Continue with your attention on the process for 10 mins. Remember to catch your mind as it wonders off and bring it back to the task at hand. Results are felt immediately if practiced in this manner.   • I use to feel short of breath before my interviews. I read a lot of tips, watched a lot videos, and practice, practice, practice!
    The suggestions of... breathing techniques are great. But personally, just keep practicing on how to reply to the questions. Read up on common questions asked, and if possible practice with a friend and role reverse so you feel comfortable. Best of luck to you! more

  • Try the 5-7-8 technique. Count to five while you breathe in, hold your breath for seven seconds, then exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat 4 times. You will... feel more relaxed. Also on the ride there you can try the “Ohm” chant that is used by Buddhist monks. The vibration of the sound “ohm” calms your nervous system.  more

    You can use biofeedback technique to bring you down from that anxiety.

    Sit down and rest your arms on the armrest of the chair or just let... them hang.

    Close your eyes and take a deep breathe through your nose but let your stomach expand as you breathe the air in, not your chest.

    Hold it for a few seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth. Pucker up your lips as if you were going to whistle. Your inhale breath should be as long as your exhale breath.
    Now do it all over again.

    You can use imaging to help you escape your immediate surroundings.

    This technique works every time. It is what I do to bring down my blood pressure before a reading. Look it up...Bio Feedback breathing. It really works!

  • Try this simple reset…. Inhale two times without an exhale…. Then exhale. (In…In…Out………..) 8x

    Then do the reverse.
    Exhale, exhale….. then inhale. ... (8x)

    You will feel your nervous system calm down.

  • One more thing. Think of your interview as going to play in a FIFA Futbol Tournament. The other country's fans are going to harass you and try to... cause fear in you.
    Think of what you need to accomplish. Your mind might wander, so you can literally tell yourself "Stop" and refocus.
    Also don't forget the guy who asked how to get to Carnegie Hall for a concert. The answer is "Practice, practice, practice". Best wishes to you!

  • Hello! I know deep breathing can help because I use it and teach it. Some of the techniques here may help. But if you can make sure that you take... breaths from your diagphragm and not from your chest they will work even better.

  • Four count method. Count a slow 4 and make inhale take that long. Then stay and count 4. Breath out count 4 make it last whole 4. Hold 4 repeat.... Saying four alligator will take a full second and give you the timing. This calms amazingly. Good luck. more
