I come from a family of teachers - my mom and grandma were both teachers too. But honestly, I don’t enjoy this job at all. What I really want is to open my own auto shop and work with cars. The problem is, I know my family would be really disappointed since teaching has always been our family’s calling.
What should I do? Thanks.

You could also explore becoming an auto shop teacher. . . .I also encourage you to read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" - it's an... interesting read; an epic about a mechanic and his search for meaning. It may help you decide how to move forward. more

  • First thing to do is to see if you can transfer to Automotive High (if it still exists, or its replacement. Then contact Bronx Community College... (CUNY) which has an auto repair major. You might change your mind about teaching or familiarize yourself about the business before you jump in. more

  • Just due to fact you followed the family career path is notable and tells me you’ve thought of others over your own happiness and well being. So as an... adult you’re recognizing life is too short and you must follow your own dream and passion. Think about the people you will be helping with jobs you create. • I say this with love- there is absolutely no reason you should stop your dreams because of your family. It’s naive to do so.

There is always a... generational pattern breaker in the family, and you my friend are the first one.

You can honor your family and the work they have done. I completely understand that and outside of living for yourself, I am positive they would love that appreciation.

To not open up your shop because everyone else is a teacher sounds crazy. Read the previous sentence once more.

In a perfect world they won’t judge you and will understand. Even through the small probability they do not- it should NOT be a factor in stopping you.

Many blessings from the Most High my friend.
