I'll be 57 yrs old next month and recently found out that i will never be able to work again! Mental health is something that i've hid from so many until i broke down and knew i needed help. I believe in my heart that I will be able to hold a job again with the proper care.

Whenever someone says they can never work again, I think "You can't do the work you have always done, but that doesn't mean you can't work and be... productive." Work with a vocational rehabilitation counselor to see what there is that you can do when you are ready. Your state likely has a voc rehab division that can help you. Best of luck for the future! more

  • Thank you so much for opening up that takes strength and courage. What you’re feeling is deeply human, and your hope is powerful.

Here’s what I want... to gently remind you from a psychological and compassionate perspective

Even though you’ve been told you may never work again, that doesn’t mean your story is over. You’re allowed to believe in your own healing. Mental health challenges can be life-altering, but they are not life-defining. With the right care, support, and patience, many people do stabilize, regain their confidence, and return to meaningful activities including work, if and when it feels right.

It’s okay to grieve the loss of your current ability to work, but don’t lose hope. Your belief in your potential is a strong and important part of your recovery. Healing isn’t a straight line, and setbacks don’t mean failure they’re part of the process.

Please keep reaching out, keep talking, and allow yourself the support you need. You are not alone, and your life still holds value, purpose, and possibility whether through work or other meaningful paths.

    You’re brave. And that matters.

  • I also struggle with mental health. Find it difficult to commit to any type of work. How about working for yourself.

  • Lisa, try this exercise and really get into it.
Step 1. Think of the thing that you loved and looked forward to getting as a kid and you actually... received.
Step 2. Close your eyes and go back to how you felt about the item and what made you want it so bad as a kid and how you would play with it when you got it and be so thankful for it.
Step 3. Now think about how you felt when you got it in your hands, the joy, the smile, the little dance, the way you said thank you and how you felt getting the item. Really feel the moment play out the smile and reaction and everything.
Then open your eyes and be that kid again with your whole heart and never forget joy is in what you make it. See the light in everything because sometimes the universe sends you a gift you think is a curse, only for you to see it only once it’s gone. The answer is within you just remember the you before life changed you.

  • Lisa thanks for sharing your trials. I have been unable to work in the medical field which is all I have known since I was 17. Been grounded for 15... years now due to 15 different medical issues and I pray daily, make meals for myself and family as well as give food to the informed people and new people joining our church community. Stay positive always offer up your daily sufferings and whatever is bothering you to the Lord in morning prayer and thanks and gratitude at night before you go to bed. God can and will carry you through this chapter in your life. If you don’t have a church or relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ reach out to anyone you know and I’m sure they will be happy to have you in there Church circle.  more
