I’m interviewing for a kindergarten teacher position. Yesterday I had an interview with the director and he asked only one question “How would you explain the color yellow to a blind person?”
I’m still in shock! Is this how he treats children? Does he think they’re blind or stupid? Or was he just messing with me?

He was probably not asking only about physical blindness but was testing your creativity and communication skills needed when teaching young... children. A child can see the color yellow but still not understand what makes it special or meaningful. Children do not learn the way adults do. Imagination, real experiences, tone of voice, and feelings help bring ideas to life and help children connect them to their own real life experiences. more

  • I will explain like this -- You are not seeing colors now but if some one donates eye to you then you will see and enjoy colors. Yellow is what ripe... banana or ripe lemon looks like.  more

  • I believe the question should focus on feelings, since the kid is blind. I will say
"Yellow feels like the warmth of the sun on your face when you... step outside". We can also use yellow to signify a smile or joy based on brightness. The kid should be able to relate to the color in that light more

  • Few options of answers:
    1. There is no need to explain, the person is blind. Don't try to fixed what's not broken.
    2. Ask further if the person is... blind from birth of he/she just lost sight recently. If at birth then go to option 1. If recently lost sight, then you know the answer.

Sometimes a question has to be answered with a question to clarify. Never assume.

  • It’s the color of sunshine.

  • Can the blind (student) know the colors without seeing? I am getting lost.

  • What if the yellow I see is the pink you see? Perception is everything, everyone sees the world differently, but we all have to thrive within the... parameters we are given. Whether blind, d/Deaf, or colorblind relevence to individualized education is also important. My opinion is that is an interesting disability question, but a question out of left field for sure. more

  • I can honestly say I went to you with the mercy for elementary education and that was never even a question that even popped up ever when I was doing... my teaching methods... But honestly give yourself a break and give yourself some Grace and just better expand yourself and finding out little information I have a client I take care of now that is deaf and blind so he may pose a question like that to you you just do the footwork to make sure next time you don't ever make that mistake I will give an answer... For an abstract mind and then when they ask you do you have any questions at the end I will say now how would you teach a deaf and blind person with the color yellow is and then let me know what's being said or if they take a step back.... You'll be fine girly take this as a a strong lesson to teach yourself to strengthen and areas that you thought people would never even try to test and then come back hard with that last question I just gave you.  more

  • That’s definitely an unexpected question. While it may have been intended to test creativity and empathy, without context it's understandable why it... would feel confusing or uncomfortable, especially in a field where clear and respectful communication is so important. more

  • He is challenging your abstract mind and artistic sense of non literal information. Basically a blind persons world.

  • The problem is not the question but the Director was checking ---- adaptability to inclusive teaching, imagination, creativity levels, handling... diverse intelligences' among learners, and application of associations. That question is key and very essential because at Kindergarten, those children are fully dependent of the teacher to educate them (latin root of education is "educere" - bring forth like a midwife ---thus help the children bring forth their different intellectual capacities.  more
