5 Expert Tips To Help You Stand Out In A Job Interview & Land The Gig

I'm a big believer in the importance of first impressions.

A first date, your first day of uni, and most importantly IMO -- your first job interview with a company.

With so many applicants and job hunters out there, say it with me -- first impressions are EVERYTHING. You have to do something to stand out from the noise.

The importance of dressing accordingly for your chosen company is understated, says Jackie.

"It's a big part of your first and last impression. Check if the company has any formal dress code, or if it's more relaxed, and dress accordingly."

Jackie also honed in on the importance of hygiene at a job interview. It might seem like common sense, but you would be surprised.

"Basic hygiene is incredibly important. Make sure to show up exactly as you hope an interviewer would show up for you."

"It's not thinking you know everything about the role or being arrogant about your experience," says Jackie.

"It's about having the confidence that you know you're capable, and have the right skills for the job because you've put in the work."

But a pro tip if you want to be the most memorable interviewee? Make 'em laugh.

"The most memorable interviewees are not only confident, but they show up as their unique selves which presents really well," says Jackie.

"Crack a joke -- make your interviewer laugh!"

"Give yourself plenty of time to prepare, and talk with the people around you. You can even get your friends or family to help you out with mock interviews," says Jackie.

"Do whatever you need to get comfortable on the day, whether that's a morning walk, some meditation, or your usual rituals."

If push comes to shove, it can even be helpful to mention to your interviewer how you're feeling.

"Don't be afraid to ask for some water or a quick breather if it hasn't already been offered to you. Your interviewer is human too."

"Questions are the best opportunity for you to make sure the company and job aligns with you. Think about what's important to you -- what do you want to get out of this job?" says Jackie.

"My personal favourite is to ask what the interviewer's favourite part of their job is. This shows interest in your interviewer as a potential future colleague."

You don't even need to keep it all positive.

"It's also insightful to ask what the challenges are, so you don't just get a rose-tinted view of the company," says Jackie.

"Give them an opportunity to be realistic. Do you want to tackle the same challenges they're facing? Will this help your career development?"

Don't forget about your body language

Anyone who's been in any social situation ever can attest to how critical body language is.

"Body language is a great way to gauge someone's level of comfort and interest, particularly when engaging with the interviewer by smiling and nodding," says Jackie.

"This shows active listening, and that you're interested in the role. It's a big part of demonstrating confidence and building trust with your interviewer, too."

This, unsurprisingly, ties into confidence too.

"Address the interviewer by name, don't be afraid to make small talk, and remember to make eye contact wherever you can. It does wonders."

So there you have it! Five tips designed to help you nail your interview and build that career confidence.
