I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Hospitality and Event Management, and I have been working part-time as a support worker for almost two years in a non-profit organisation. I am over 35 years old and feeling stressed about my pathway application. What would be the best pathway option for me?

  • Experience is important, but the ability to show you can change and learn and be adaptable that is more important!

Yes, it is completely normal to return to work after a safe delivery of your baby, and many parents successfully balance work, study,... and parenting. Given your current situation—being over 35, a mother, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Hospitality and Event Management, and working part-time as a support worker—you already demonstrate resilience and dedication.

To manage stress, consider planning a gradual return to work and seeking flexible or part-time opportunities that align with your family responsibilities. Use support systems like childcare, family help, or community services if available.

As for your pathway, a strong option could be applying for a Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate in a field that complements your degree, such as Community Development, Disability Support, or Event Planning with a Social Focus. You havr a future in MA and later on a PhD scholarsip in hospitality or tourism indusrty. This would align your hospitality skills with your experience in the non-profit sector. Alternatively, you might explore a postgraduate pathway that leads to management or coordination roles in community organisations or events for social impact. Consider speaking with a university advisor or career counsellor to match your interests and long-term goals.

  • Experience is more vital as an older worker. you should be picking up job opportunities at various venues starting as a server, section captain and... etc. set up person arranger of decorations and all those involved with event set up and execution. Also contacting venues and doing an informational interview with the people who do what you think you want to end up doing and pick their brains to find out how they got to where they are. one of the best ways is to offer to buy them lunch out on a non-busy day for them after you have had a short telephone conversation. You will be surprised on how many people will express their help after meeting you and giving you what they learned to be in the field. You must have an extroverted approach to this otherwise you are picking the wrong field as these areas require a almost type A personality with great organization and mentoring skills. more
