Job Objectives
A Database Administrator, or DBA, is responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance and security measures of company’s databases. The duties include creating

account data for authorized individuals to access databases and organizing databases so individuals can find important information in an efficient manner. Database administrators' duties include creating and maintaining adherence to a data management processes, policies and procedures while ensuring that company’s databases are functional and backed up to prevent data loss. The DBA also ensures that all databases, including those for financial or customer information, stay up-to-date.
The DBA will ensure that:

data remains consistent across the databases that are inter-related.
data is clearly defined.
users access data concurrently, in a form that suits their needs
there is provision for data security and recovery control (ensuring all data isretrievable in an emergency). This includes monitoring and updating malware protection software to combat potential security breaches.

Job Responsibilities:

Map out the conceptual design for a planned database.
Build database systems of high availability and quality depending on each end user’s specialised requirements, considering both back-end organisation of data and front-end
accessibility for end-users.
Regularly liaising with line manager and project managers/scrum masters during project initiation, planning and implementation.
Report project status as required for all recurring and non- recurring efforts.
Install and test new versions of the database managementsystem (DBMS) such as Microsoft SQL Server.
Maintain data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act.
Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata).
Develop and document technical processes and procedures as needed.
Monitoring the performance of hardware and software hosting the databases, and identifying problems that arise.
Ensuring all database hardware are able to scale dynamically according to workload intensities and that software’s are updated consistently.
Develop, manage and test back-up and recovery plans.
Ensure that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly.
Manage the security and disaster recovery aspects of a database.
Carry out capacity planning.
Ensuring that the database is adequately backed up and able to be recovered in the event of memory loss.
Recommend and implement system enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the company’s database systems including installing, upgrading/patching, monitoring, problem resolution, and configuration management.
To be the first respondent to database problems that arise and carry out periodic maintenance and troubleshooting.
Responding in a timely manner to user-reported errors.
To troubleshoot problems and work on development.
To ensure databases are secure and that they are performing properly.
To ensure that data is consistent in the database and that it is clearly defined.
Implementing cybersecurity measures.
Preserving data integrity and ethically handling private data.
Protecting the database against threats or unauthorized access.
Establish the needs of users and monitor user access and security.
Communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security.
Generate weekly, monthly and ad-hoc reports on databases as required.

Competence Requirements:

Leadership and Management Skills.
Possesses extensive knowledge of the databases under administration and displays sound technical skills and administrative aptitude.
Expert-level understanding of database design, implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance
Deep understanding of DBMS’s such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB, Oracle Database and T-SQL.
Research oriented and constant awareness of the current industry trends in Database Deployment and Administration.

Educational Qualification

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related areas

Professional Qualification

Possession of the following certifications will be an advantage:
Microsoft Certified Azure Database Administrator
Oracle Certified Professional - MySQL Database Administrator Associate

Desired Experience

12 to 16 years of functional experience in Database Design and Administration across vendor platforms.
Minimum of 4 years of team building, leadership and management experience
Software development skills will be an added advantage
