I found out my coworker is secretly interviewing for another job and told our manager because we're in the middle of an important project. Now I feel guilty. Was I protecting the team or betraying my coworker?

I dont think this was a good move. even if you have an adversarial relationship with this person who had the secret interview, there are two possible... outcomes : 1) they get the new job and leave, and you are free of that person and can show your skills to management to fill the gap, or 2) they do not get the job, and still the answer is to just try to do your work better for the team/company if you want to get ahead. Throwing someone under the bus doesn't make you better at your job, and even if you did this out of a perceived sense of loyalty to your management, it seems like this person may have been favored over you already by management and that means that they are likely to replace this person with an outside hire rather than see you as "next in line" as you might expect without actually getting merit based recognition beforehand. more

  • Apologize to your co-worker for the betrayal (if they truly told you in confidence) and move on. Next time, it is probably best if you keep such... information to yourself. more

  • We all need greener pastures. So please let go off your fellow worker.

  • That was very selfish of you. However, feeling guilt implies perhaps you were partially oblivious of the implication of what your actions. This is a... good sign. Remember not to do it again because actions have consequences and sometimes the implication may come back to bit you. Just be glad that he has not found you out.

For peace of mind, apologize and try to make amends for a clean conscious.

  • Maybe you thought it was for the good of the project. It is just a project, even if is an important one. Your coworker might have personal reasons to... do so, and it is not a sin to look for other opportunities, in fact is a smart thing to do. Forgive yourself but don’t do this again, that’s out of your line. I hope your coworker gets the job.  more

  • You found out "secretly" right? So what made it public?
Gossips and back bitting is sin that is rooted in envy and jealousy. If it was a secret, it... should have been a secret. You've broken that trust and relationship.
