Hello
My father runs a small business where only the two of us work. There’s a lot to do, and I don’t get any days off or vacation.
I’ve tried to convince him that we need to hire at least one more person, but he refuses. He’s afraid of training someone who might become a competitor.
If this continues, I’m afraid I’ll burn out completely.
How can I convince my father to hire someone?

  • Great insight.... :D

  • As a HR whenever I hear burnout I develop goose bumps. At least one day off per week and leave days are essential, and employees are entitled to... them. Please talk to your dad about it. Your health is more important. He could increase his turnover by bringing in more employees. more

  • I agree with all who recommend that you "TALK WITH YOUR DAD" first, about your needs. Let him know how much you time off you need, and that you will... help him to find someone who can help out.  more

  • Just try to strike a balance with your daddy. Patience pays. Good luck!

  • The question is how can you convince your father to hire someone. His fear is that a new trained person will become his competitor. Ask him, is he the... only person doing that line of business? What's wrong with someone learning from him? We should aspire to be those that are willing to teach others especially the young generation. Everyone learns from another and business continues. If there were to be one business per person in a locality, most people would be having no Jobs. He should be positive about it. The business will not die even after the trained person leaves.they will all work and survive or even grow  more

  • This is funny,,,you need your father to employ someone so that you can go for vacation....if i was him,i would fire you and allow you go for vacations...  more

  • By no days off do you mean no weekends? How long has this been going on? A year or more? If no weekends and its over a year then you Dad is a... workaholic. Not much you can do about that. Maybe your Mom cold sit down with him too? Running your own business is like that. The buck stops with the owner so he has to do everything. One problem for you is - are there any jobs out there? Another suggestion is learn from him. Study everything he is doing. If he is that busy he is successful and one day you might inherit the business.  more

  • My brother, getting such kind of experience is very expensive. Your father is training a self-reliant you, but you don't understand. At the same time,... be cautious enough to explain to your father about your days off in situations where business is not booming but also be careful to be dragged away from business by peer groups whose parents have already made money or money is multiplying for them. Although association is good, kindly request for vacations in regards to business so that your father sees a sense of maturity in handling business matters but not to come back from a vacation and all you are talking about is how you spent his money without rewards. Be still, all expensive and shinning Golden and admired bracelets go under intense heat to be better molded.

  • big difference between employer and employee....when you become an employer, you will also think like him only. moreover he is not refusing to appoint... instead he is making you to learn more and face the situations. the bad situation might have not afftected you now since because your father is protecting you and your father's company. You must take charge of the present situations now at this point. ensure your availability to your father always and demonstrate yourself that your abilities. Later you wont ask for anything against your thinking  more

  • Young man there is time for everything. It's not yet time for you to start looking for vacation OR leave of office. How on earth do you say that you... don't rest? Thank GOD for your father and his relentlessness. How many parents have any investment, job, business for their dependents. Please endure a little while. Thank you. more

  • Don't tell him what to do. Tell him you understand his concerns about hiring others. Explain what you need, ie more work-life balance so that you... can continue to work with him, not burn out etc, enjoy the business. Therefore, ask him to give it some thought, tell him you trust him to come up with some possible ideas that would work for both of you.
If you show him respect, and give him space, he may surprise you.

  • Not sure what kind of business you have, but you could always have the person sign a non disclosure and enter into a contract

  • Also consider having the person start with functions that are trade secrets until a relationship of trust is built.

  • Have a frank conversation, but if he hasn’t taken days off in years, you may have your work cut out for you. If you are having stress related... ailments maybe your health concerns could be your launching point.  more

  • But that's also a hard task in itself, so good luck! And talk to your friends about what's going on and see what they say! Nobody can do it all... themselves! more

  • Hire someone who's dedicated to a task and their work but not someone who actually wants to work in that career long term.
