I think I blew the interview yesterday because of how I answered one question “What would you do if you were the only survivor of a plane crash?”
I said that if I was fine and no one else needed help, I’d look through the passengers’ stuff to find a phone and call the police or rescue services. That seems pretty logical to me. But the HR immediately asked if that counts as stealing.
That really made me stop and think, mainly about whether I even want to work there. If they already annoy me during the interview, it’ll probably be way worse once I’m actually working there. What do you think?

As someone who interviewed well over 100 people in my career, that question is out of bounds.
I would have answered "That is a very intense scenario... and I can see how it might bring up issues for people who have had intense traumatic experiences in their lives, so I would never discuss that with colleagues, or with you, as a potential colleague. I would be happy to tell you about my crisis-management skills in something that is related to things that could happen on the job." more

  • I think there is no problem as long as I use it properly and make profitable things .

  • When given such a situation, the first step is to THINK, for a brief moment, on how you'll tie your answer into the required skills and abilities of... the specific position/ role.
This question is meant to evaluate problem-solving under pressure, adaptability, and composure. Focus on immediate prioritization: assess for danger (ensuring your personal safety), check for other survivors, provide first aid if possible, and then find ways to signal for rescue.
In short, YOU WERE SPOT ON WITH YOUR RESPONSE!!

  • I think that's a ridiculous question for an interview and also what that person said about you stealing when clearly you went into survival mode.

  • i would fly to the nearest island

  • I will fall on my knees and give God thanks. If I get the job it because of God and if I don’t get the job it because of God, he open and closes... doors! more

  • I would have immediately turned the question around. Stating that if I worked for your company and used what I have access to here to do the job,... would you accuse me of stealing? I don't own this company, so everything I would use here belongs to someone else, right? So, am I stealing? If that is the case, so are you. more

  • You better do your own thing.

  • Always answer honestly. As a professional headhunter, I was impressed with your answer & survivor reasoning. That’s what’s leaders do in tragic... situations while others cry over superficial idiocies. more

  • I’d praise The GOD of my understanding and be grateful I survived. AMEN

  • Great question. How can you show you can think on your feet? Stop, take a deep breath and don't come across angry or upset. Respond carefully.

  • Why do i feel, logically, the HR as interviewer was not attentive? You clearly said, "you would look for a phone around and call for help", so, the... phone was going to be used to contact for help at that moment only. Unless she wanted to test your tolerance level. 😊 more

  • Interestingly, I viewed the question differently from everyone else. I was thinking more in terms of long range and not necessarily immediately. I... would have answered in the manner of trying to figure out the purpose of why I was the only survivor of the crash, and giving support to that purpose.  more

  • Please tell us what type of job this is for. Because Unless you were interviewing for a job on a plane, I don’t see why this question was asked . And... even if you were my answer before saying what you said would be “I would hope that we’d get training for how to handle this but the only thing I can think of is…” and then proceeded with whatever thought came to mind . Because unless this is something you’ve already been trained for how would you know what to do? more

  • Ethical dillema. (The phone part- stealing or not). There are a number of philosophical approches to view ethical and un-ethical decisions.. That... question falls there. So not neccesary toxic work environment. Its a philosophical question. more

  • Consider taking the pressure off yourself and perhaps consider WHY an employer would pose such a question. Is the culture of that employer that of... the Hunger Games? There is no wrong answer to a question. You may have dodged a bullet more

  • In my view, I think your answers were spot-on as this is a survivor situation.
Plane crashes are incidents that leave no survivors due to the height... of descent and the explosions that result afterward.
You took into account the question: you were assumed to be the only survivor and so, rescue was the one word on your mind.

From my judgment as an HR, you came right through.

    Don't beat yourself down. 👍🏼

  • But according to my thinking, you didn’t asses the question before answering!(which is normal in an interview ). U would have thought about were most... planes land when they are crushing. If survivors are there “it’s probably in water and not on land”.Is it possible you could have network in those areas? more
