Yesterday I went to an interview for a junior economist position. They offered me to work for a month or two for free like an internship, and then, if a vacancy opens up, they might hire me.
Is this some kind of scam? The company seems respectable, but I don’t understand why they’re holding interviews if there isn’t an actual job available.
Would you agree to something like that?

No respectable company will ask you to do free work. Hard pass on that BS. If they don't value you now, they never will.

  • Consult and employment attorney - this sounds like bait and switch.
Also we need to pay our interns. Otherwise only people who have some other means... to support themselves get the benefits of this time of inside experience.
Run away. They are not honoring the terms they advertised.

  • If you are not paying for the interview, you are a beneficiary in terms of experience besides the offer to be employed if the place falls vacant. I... also.imagine you need to be busy if you were actually looking for placement. I think it is better you evaluate that opportunity better than the advice you are seeking. more

  • No, Never Ever Not Get Paid! Report them to your states workforce commission.
That experience you can get by calling non profits and asking for a job... or volunteering your services which may not pay bill but will add to your resume as experience possibly changing into a paid position. Non profits are famous for that! more

  • Years ago I had a similar offer and took it. Everyday I hoped that today was the day.Soon new positions continued to open up and new people were hired... without looking my way. A few months in I realised I wasn't the only one and there were others who had been there over an year with the hope of payed positions. My advice is to discreetly find if there others with the same deal in the company or maybe any paid hires who started from such a position and how long it took.  more

  • If in the US, some states have clearly articulated laws about unpaid internships. I would do some research. If you have nothings else it may be... worth a try. BUT, keep looking. If they offer you a job after a month, great. If not you have gotten some experience and can move on. Internships are not new, and a gamble on both sides. Do you want to take a chance?, is the question you have to ask yourself. more

  • If you do accept the internship, at least ask for a stipend for basic expenses like transportation. If you would work from home, through your... computer and phone usage, you would be using your electricity, utilities, etc. more

  • They're not respectable if they can't respect your skills and time.
    Even internship is paid.

  • Never work for free. When you allow a company to take advantage of you by not paying you a fair wage for your work, it will always end with you being... shorted out of much more than money. Shame on this company and yes, this is a scam. more
