Yesterday I went to an interview for a junior economist position. They offered me to work for a month or two for free like an internship, and then, if a vacancy opens up, they might hire me.
Is this some kind of scam? The company seems respectable, but I don’t understand why they’re holding interviews if there isn’t an actual job available.
Would you agree to something like that?

No respectable company will ask you to do free work. Hard pass on that BS. If they don't value you now, they never will.

  • What’s your qualifications if I may ask? Maybe I can help.?

  • Never work for free. When you allow a company to take advantage of you by not paying you a fair wage for your work, it will always end with you being... shorted out of much more than money. Shame on this company and yes, this is a scam. more

  • If there are no job offers on the horizon, It may be worth considering (as you continue your search for a paid position). The main question to... consider is whether you can turn this volunteer position into your stepping stone to paid employment. In other words, you will want to ensure, the work experience adds real value to your resume.

The "offer" as you have described it sounds rather vague, so you will need to ensure the terms of the internship are articulated. Is there a job description? What can you expect in terms of an orientation to the role and the company, supervision and feedback on your work? If your work meets expectations, would the company be prepared to provide you with a reference and/or a referral to prospective employers if it doesn't offer you a position at the end of the term?

  • They are looking for talent, and there are good and bad economics graduates. If they find their fit, they'll offer a contract.

  • I employed 3 people after a month of free volunteer internships. It was a budget conscious NGO, and the interns needed a lot of bringing up to speed. ... They may only need a week or two to see if you are a fit.
I would go for it if I were you.

  • Some company does that but that isn’t an internship but rather graduate trainee.

  • Of course that is how some respectable company tests your patience.

  • Not in this economy, no one is working for free...HARD NO and block them. Keep searching. Temporary agencies are a way to get hired full time, too.

  • It's awkward to have it done that way after advertising and holding interviews, I suggest you engage the personnel who has said so such that you... discuss it out...could be they are testing your loyalty too to get you to a paying post. more
