Hi! Is every job interview this weird now or was I just unlucky? Yesterday I went to an interview at an insurance company and they asked me “What can you do with a regular pencil?” So I started coming up with random ideas.
Then they asked “What’s the difference between a yeti’s ears and a human’s ears?”.
I was shocked. Is this really how they choose candidates now?

I think you probably nailed the first one with creative ideas showing that you're a thinker. Also, there are probably more pencil accidents that... require insurance than we realize. I think on the second one I would have said, "What has this got to do with insurance?" thinking that perhaps some of the job is not getting bogged down in bullshit. more

  • I would have responded "First tell me this: Why does my insurance go up every 6 months?" :)
They are trying to test your creative, think -on-... your-feet skills, apparently.  more

  • I think they were trying to see your level of thinking and that if you’re capable of resolving problems testing your skills

  • As soon as I read “insurance company” I laughed. Many years ago I was employed at a major one, and they hired “time managers” among other... questionable maneuvers even though the company could not constructively address its own internal “computer downtime” that lasted a week every month. When I suggested they use some of it to teach employees about the industry—we had very little to do—my manger scoffed and directed me to look busy. The upside was that the nonsense—so much more—drove me back to college. more

  • Vor allem, weil doch jeder Mensch schon einen Yeti gesehen hat.

  • Perhaps, they want to explore your problem solving/imagination skills.

  • Sounds off to me. What foes that have to do with insurance?
