Hi everyone. It looks like our company is planning layoffs, and now they’re secretly testing all the employees. For example, the boss “accidentally” drops a pen and waits to see if someone picks it up. Or he says he’d like some tea and watches who goes to make it for him. There are other situations like this too.
My question is: do they really want to keep only the people who try to please the boss? Are they ready to let good professionals go just because they don’t flatter him? What would you do in my situation?

Start polishing up your resume. If the decision to keep someone is dependent on who makes the boss tea, rather than the most productive employee or... most qualified employee then the company does not value any of you. Your better off finding a better position. more

  • My first reaction is that you may be paranoid. If the boss does engage in such antics, may be I should consider moving to a more professional... organization. Too much time is wasted in trying to catch such antics and discussing the intrigue. more

  • If boss drops a pen and others are watching it, what short of work you are doing? If you have spare time to watch boss drop the pen, then you must... oick that for him & make tea also. more

  • Talk to him directly; ask him what his rationale is?
if he's lookin g for employees to suck up to him, maybe you're in the wrong job, just sayin '!!

  • I am a survivor of these actions.A company awarding loyalists and disregarding experience and expertise is braced for failure.

  • Leave, no one is going to be treated like a slave these days for money. That is like "pimpin people" and if you don't value what I bring to the table,... then I won't bring your pen to the table. However, if you don't have faith you will fall for it. Trust that you are worth more that a boss treating you less than the S.T.A.R. (Smart Talented Awesome Respected) Person that you are.  more

  • My wife works as an Admin Specialiist and with a boss very similar to yours. She kept tellig me how her boss would want her to go an extra miles for... her like uy me fruit using the petty cash, scrap the walls, clean the window even after work. She broke dow a lot of time and I couldn't handled it anymore. I told her to stop doing such nonsenze but at the end of the day she was almost fired if it wasn't for the HR who took time to investigate. My advise to so called boses, 'Please, be mindful of the people who are mindful about your work, because at the ned of the day they carry the donkey tasks and you take the credits' more
