I had a job interview yesterday and most of the questions weren’t about my experience or skills, but about my personal life. They asked about my boyfriend, our plans and even our intimate relationship. I’m shocked. Is it normal to ask things like that?
I feel really uncomfortable and gross after they basically dug into my private life

No, this is not normal and can be considered harassment. I highly suggest writing down the specifics , as I’m sure you’re not the only person this... happened to. Depending on where you’re located you may want to anonymously post to a job board to warn other candidates.  more

  • In Hungary, in the last 15 years it has been asked from me in all job interviews. All of them. On one of the most humiliated inteviews they asked... about the salary of my boyfriend, and They asked why did I not have children. I answered that physically I could not bear child. They told me with cinism, that yes we all hear about magical pregnancy after the first year in the new job...shocking.... more

  • Inquiring about your personal life is out of bounds. I certainly wouldn't consider working at that company

  • Next time just let the interviewer know his or her limits. Remind or inform him for this was a disrespect and unprofessional.

  • You should have asked what does my personal life have to do with the job I've applied for! This sounds like a pervert looking for another prey! If you... get the job, ensure you have a system of accountability in dealing with superiors at all times! This is truly sad a person trying to find work to make a honest bread when whom you have to work for are preaditors! more

  • This is not normal, probably the interview panel had no idea about the job requirements

  • You should have stood up and walked out of the interview.

According to NYC labor law, an employer cannot ask for personal information not pertaining to the position for which you are applying. Questions... regarding protected characteristics—such as age, marital status, religion, disability, or family planning—are generally illegal as they can facilitate discrimination during the hiring. Become familiar with the this so in the future, you may know how to self-advocate and defend your rights. more

  • There's no formal job that requires such information. You can choose not to respond to that line of questioning for a job interview in the future. ... This gives you an indicator of what kind of employer you will be working with. It is not professional!  more

  • This was more of an Emotional Intelligence checker. It depends on the nature of the job for which you were being interviewed, I see nothing grossly... wrong with the line of questions. Remember, you have a boyfriend? then your life is not private!

  • That was marriage interview and not job related interview
or one of the bosses is single and looking for someone who is single also

  • If its not job related you're not required to answer. Don't be intimidated to ask how this relates to the job I'm interviewing for. Then refuse to... answer additional questions about your personal life. Did they hire you? more
