My wife earns more than I do, so we've agreed that I'll handle more of the childcare and housework. My manager seems to think this means I'm less ambitious. Should I care what they think, or am I being unfairly judged?

  • Doesn't matter what we think! You made and agreement. AND why does your boss even know what was decided in your home? It's no one's business. Now... you suffer the consequences of his opinion. Please. Do not let his opinion affect your agreement and relationship with your wife. You opened a door that is not easily closed. Good luck.  more

  • The world has changed, one person earning more than the other doesn’t necessarily equate to one person being more ambitious than the other. At times... it’s just luck.
Don’t feel belittled, as long as you’re putting in your best, you can handle childcare and housework then probably transition to a high paying remote role.

  • Quietly work at self improvement so that you take more family responsibilities. No need to discuss domestic issues with outsiders e.g. your manager.(... Your wife is also yours including her earnings!) more

  • Why does what one EARNS have anything to do with division of household duties?

  • Your Manager is VERY CORRECT!
Just because she earns more than you do doesn't mean you should give in as you're planning to do. If you ask me, I see... it as a challenge for you as the man of the House to step up your game, by finding out how you can catch up and probably surpass her! Sharing your financial responsibility with her in exchange for her domestic responsibilities is not a good idea, if you ask me.
I would strongly suggest you cut your livelihood to fit your present income. STOP SEEING HER INCOME AS PART OF THE FAMILY'S INCOME! It's HER MONEY, bro!
If she willingly give, let it be after you have presented what you can afford. Don't EVER leave any financial obligation for her to handle, handle all financial obligations ACCORDING to your current means while you strive harder to increase your means. I say this as a husband and a family man myself!
The sanity and longevity of your marriage depends HEAVILY on sticking to your role as the BREAD WINNER of the House. Yes, she may augment occasionally and whenever she does, tell her to write down with the aim of paying her back ASAP!
I rest my case for now!

  • Why EXACTLY are you working so hard, is it to cater for the needs of your family or because you want to build a career??? If the Primary reason you're... working is to cater for your family, then, know that you can't take up jobs that has room for family life! That job offer is designed for single men and women not a family person like you!
As for your husband, he should get busy with the process of starting his own business. Let him find a problem that people would pay to solve. Let him find the best of solutions and start getting paid. Nobody's supposed to be UNEMPLOYED in today's Nigeria. There are way too many opportunities out there for anyone to claim that he's unemployed!

  • He's an asshole. My wife also earned more while I was more involved with my two sons. Now we have two healthy men who are independent of us, and I... continue to build a career. They love me more than their mom :)) more

  • its all confidence of the individuals, your wife has more confidence than you, not only in salaries and also in demands. raise your level first till... then accept her demands. thats good for your family  more

  • How did you start discussing family affairs at work place. Avoid disrespecting your family at all times.

  • Care what people think when they wipe your bottom as you leave the commode. Care what people think when they kiss your bobos when you fall. Care what... people think when they pay your bills. Otherwise who cares what people think! more

  • I think you’re being unfairly judged if your manager is equating family responsibilities with a lack of ambition. Taking on more childcare and... responsibilities at home doesn’t mean you’re any less committed to doing your job well or advancing professionally.

What should matter in the workplace is your performance, reliability, contributions, and ability to meet the expectations of your role. Ambition can also look different for different people. Not everyone defines success by working the longest hours or making their career the center of their life.

I’d continue demonstrating your value professionally while maintaining the arrangement that works for your family.

Being committed to your family and being committed to your career are not mutually exclusive.

  • Don’t tell your business at work. You can see the BS it causes. Do your work and go home to your family!

  • It's not your manager's business. If it affects your tardiness or regularly scheduled work days it does matter to the job. You might need a... different job. Or maybe your current job will be able to allow you to work from home on some or all days. more

  • No. You ARE less ambitious. I would fire you

  • Sometimes is good not to think low of oneself... Such kind of responsibilities depends on in the situation at hand... Helping your partner shows a... great art of humility... since she earns a lot lending a hand doesn't demean your position, title nor position... After all it's your house too and your children too, they are both your responsibility just as it's hers...  more

  • How did you start discussing your family matters (even your wife's income) with your boss? It is so weird! Stop talking about your wife and children... at your workplace. Learn to draw boundaries. Don't think all workmates love to see us happy in our families. If your next pay rise delays, know that someone thinks you already have more than back home courtesy of your wife. more
