Hello! We’re a small travel agency with a close team of women. Recently, a young guy was hired as a sales manager. But he has no basic knowledge, he doesn’t even know where China or South America are. I don’t understand how he’s going to sell tours to clients.
The owner thinks he’ll learn and do fine. But maybe he doesn't realize how little he knows? Should I tell the owner or stay out of it? I’m worried we could lose customers because of him. Thanks

  • He can always learn in this digital world.all he needs is you people to be by his side and help him out then in few months he will b okay

  • You women better help that young man; it could be a test. What if that young man is the son or nephew of the owner and wants to see who will help him... and teach him about the company because his Father or Mother is having him trained by the best woman in the company to help him and when he becomes your boss, the one that helped will be the only one there with a raise and higher position. That's why you always have to be kind to people because you never know who is. It's a lesson I learned at a young age. more

  • Ignorance is the lack of exposure to knowledge, but foolishness is the outcome of failure to learn.
I am glad you didn't say he is foolish, teach him... tthen he will be good. more

  • Rita, I hear the concern that your expressed, but I also hear the concern you didn't express. You are a team of women and that can be an environment... which naturally fosters assistance and acceptance. With the inclusion of a young unqualified man in a managers position it maybe innately assumed that the women will train him. And the real concern is this might be something you don't want to do. My advice is welcome him into the workspace but don't train him, it'snot your responsibility. Sometimes it's important to simply stay in our lane and to do so without malice or contempt to others, but respect for ourselves. more

  • Interest scenario. but first thing first, 'you are a team of women', that statement talks volume. Why women alone? are you dealing in women... merchandise that require mostly expertise from that gender? Is his presence offsetting the equation? You noted that he has no work experience, this might be so, since you are a team, pull together. That is what teams do. Help the new employee get his footing. Team leaders inspire, they mentor and build skills and confidence of team members. You haven't indicated any efforts you've made to understand the challenges the new employee might be facing. Explore deeper, perhaps there is something you can do. should there be family connections between the boss and him, i advise that you slow down and play your part intelligently devoid of antagonistic approach. He may turn out to be the missing cog for your organization. more

  • I see he should be the one to start building capacity and make him get know all the areas of their interest

  • Are you the boss or you report to him? remember the staff performance stand to be appraised/evaluated whether he measures the job specs interns of set... goals so do not pretend to look good for yourself and not for the organization.  more

  • How did he get hired in the first place if he is unknowlodgeable about some basic information about tours abd travel industry?

  • If he has good work ethics, he will more than likely exceed your expectations. Especially with your expertise and assistance generously shared.

  • Why does his gender matter? Your comments feel a bit sexist.

  • He has no such knowledge? Where is from? USA?
He should rather learn how to get the job in McDonald's or something like this.
He hasn't got special... talents, he rather has special needs.  more

  • Stay out of it. I believe your concern may be not as genuine as you have explained. Maybe I'm wrong, but given the fact that this person was hired by... the owner who obviously has the know how to run his business, but not the foresight to promote from within, is it tough to bear? This young person may be or have special talents that the team are not privy to. Possibly even family ties. I am also troubled every time someone brings up an issue, starting a phrase "Team of Women/Men" and the subject is of the opposite sex. same issue if it was color, religion, etec. etc. etc. You expressed that the owner has already stated the reason why he hired this young man, knowing that he had some ramping up to do, which is what all of us have done to reach the levels required of us. Help him out as an example of what teams do. If he falls, help him fall forward. His test will be in getting back up or just staying down. At that point, your views can be aired with the owner.

  • Rita, don't rise by taking others down. Give him room to learn. And assist him. He shall surely do great

  • There's always room to learn. We know what we do today because we learnt it. No one knows it from inception.

  • I am from Kenya, and I can always volunteer myself to teach him. Give the guy a chance
