My partner earns enough that I could technically stop working, but I'm worried that leaving the workforce would hurt me if our situation ever changed. Has anyone chosen to stay in a career for independence rather than income?

  • Why would you ever stop working if you enjoy what you do? Simply stopping because you might not "need" the income is not a good reason. Fulfillment,... enjoyment, satisfaction, accomplishment, value added; will you experience all these if you left your job?  more

  • Sounds like some boundary issues. There’s a reason they feel this way that typically falls into to areas, that coworker has too much access to you... after hours, and/or, you have projected a reason for them to feel this way.

    Leaving a job won’t change the connection or behavior.

  • What happens if the partnership is altered? Divorce, death, break-up or terminal illness can all change the situation in a heart beat (or lack of).... Then what would you do, what's your back-up plan? I suggest you stay employed at some level, increase your savings, open a retirement account or 2. Use your money as a vacation or rainy day fund.  more

  • Work can be fulfillment. You do not state your age. You should verify what an employment gap might do to your Social Security payouts in the future.... If you have a gap in employment, be prepared to explain it to the satisfaction of any prospective new employers. more

  • Unless your partner put in writing that they are willing to support you and put money away for you to ensure you are provided for in the event that... you are no longer together, then I would advise you to continue working. if your partner is your legal spouse, that may offer some protections, but financial independence is essential. The lack of it will lead one into desperation. more
