My manager told me that if I want to reach the next level, I need to start "acting like an executive," which apparently means answering messages at 10pm. Is this really what career progression looks like?
  • Security industry for example requires your input any time particularly if you are in operations department

  • NOPE!!!

  • Yes it is what career progression looks like. Look closely at those ahead who are moving through the ranks quickly, every single one of them goes the... extra mile after everyone else chooses to stop at where their salary reaches. Do only the "extra miles" you are comfortable with and particularly only skills and network that you personally want for yourself not what the job needs only, that is the secret to thriving. more

  • What industry are you in? There has to be a reason why you’re expected to answer a 10 pm call. Are the calls local or international or both. A 10 pm... call could mean a problem is being escalated and an executive on a call becomes a game changer. Of course I’m speculating but I can say from experience that there were times when an executive joined our technical calls at all times of the night to observe and make executive decisions when needed. All I can say right now until I have more information. more

  • No. Your personal time is your own. You may choose to spend extra time to help a coworker or in special situations such as entertaining clients. In... executive ranks, it may be more prevalent. Anyway you can discuss it with him. Remember your priorities: your health, your family, your job..in that order. more
