My company expects me to answer Slack messages at night and on weekends. My manager says that's just part of being in a senior role. I have two young children and I'm exhausted. How do you set boundaries without killing your career?

Truly senior roles have people reporting to them that you are able to train up and spread the workload across. If there is a need for 24/7 response in... your work, so be it, but good leadership from your boss would acknowledge that you can spread this on-call duty among other employees on a rotating basis so that 1) nobody burns out, 2) if someone takes a vacation or leaves the company, whatever is driving this 24/7 need is not going to hamstring the company. if this isnt an on-call duty role and is about sales, sales support, or client relations, the answer is still similar. An effective "boss" will recognize that for the sake of the business, he/she cannot rely on only one person to be able to answer whatever questions they feel they need to ask 24/7 on slack, they need some redundancy or be able to answer the questions they are asking themselves.  more

  • You need to set boundaries. You define your role as "senior", but what does that mean? If you are in the "C" suite, then expectations are different.... Letting your supervisor know you can be available at certain times but not 24/7 should not sink your career. If they respond negatively, they are being unreasonable and you should look elsewhere for work. more

  • You are paid for the competencies and skills you possess, not for your free time. Your boss is lying. A career in such an environment is dead anyway... because after a few years in such a workplace you will be spiritually dead too. more

  • Is this considered on-call or is it over and above. Frankly, you are being taken advantage of. Ask this question, “will someone die if you don’t... respond.” If the answer is no, then it just isn’t that important.  more

  • Back in the day we had pagers…some people actually thought the were important until it started going off. Bottom line that’s why it’s important to... move up the food chain to get way from the grunt work. My only advice is suck up until a better job comes along with out the after hours crap!!!! more

  • what does your contract says? Does it include whatever your manager says? of not then tell him about it, that doesn't mean you don't follow the... company's rules or policy. Just do what the contract you sign says.  more

  • That is unreasonable demand if it is a regular feature. Try to convince them. Otherwise look for alternative job suitable to your profile ( mention... your requirements) and then only quit .  more

  • I think there’s a difference between accepting greater responsibility in a senior role and being expected to be available 24/7.
Occasional... after-hours situations may come with leadership, but if nights and weekends have become the normal expectation, it’s reasonable to have a conversation about boundaries.

I’d approach your manager professionally and focus on expectations rather than simply saying you won’t respond. Ask what truly requires an immediate response after hours and what can reasonably wait until the next business day. That demonstrates commitment while also establishing some limits.

Being dedicated to your career shouldn’t require being constantly connected at the expense of your family and your own well-being.

Good boundaries aren’t a lack of commitment—they help make a demanding career sustainable.

  • I'm assuming your career pays you a salary and not an hourly wage. If answering slack messages isn't listed as your duties and responsibility, then... boundaries have already been set by your organization for you.  more

  • Killing your ties with that company does not kill your career! Unless you feel your pay compensates you to put your family and personal well behind... company needs boundaries are healthy. Healthy boundaries will actually make you stronger in your role. Your supervisor/ colleagues lack of boundaries doesn't have to define where your boundaries lie. Stand strong in the work you provide in the allotted hours. You got this!!  more

  • Senior roles demand flexibility and because of this therefore respond to those messages and do not get tire.

  • Please be flexible to the maximum your organization or supervisor needs. Do not be fixed to your roles, aware that your driver is the... supervisor/manager more
