I recently started working at a bank branch and I'm surprised that everyone knows everyone else's salary. People talk about it openly, even before a new employee starts.
On my first day, at least two coworkers told me that I was too young to be earning that much and that I didn't deserve it.
Now we're getting a new employee, and everyone is talking about how much she'll be paid. The branch manager is actually the one sharing this information. Is this normal or professional? Should I report it to head office or the compliance/security department? It doesn't seem right that employees' salary information is being shared so openly. Thanks

  • In reality, salary or wages are not secret and you ought to know how much your colleagues, bosses and surbordiates earn....it is part of internal KYC... ...while it has its pros and cons but you have to accept that reality if you work in a bank or financial institution. The atttitude of your coleagues needs to be addressed.....as bankers you ought to learn how to manage information and must have signed employee indemnity agreement . While it is common for discussion about salary to come up in workplace be it bank or anywhere they are not to judge who merit such salary . most times it is old and disgruntled employees that sounds like that. less more

  • There should be transparency, only reason there wasn't is because upper managment and above was either practicing some discrermenatory way of paying... people less for the same job based off whatever they chose and/or that is how they keep their bonuses fat. It's an old trick and the trick of people deeply steeped in a non equitable mindset.  more
