Hi everyone! Today my boss scolded me for reading a book and eating a sandwich at my desk. He said I wasn’t working. I told him it was my lunch break. But he said that if I leave the office for lunch, that’s fine, but if I’m at my desk I should only be working.
I’d gladly go read in the park but it’s still too cold outside. Now I’m not sure what to do. What do you think?

    Scolded? Like a child?
Make a list of everything this clown does that’s unprofessional. Then drop it off at HR, copy his manager as well as board of... directors. You will then have made a record which can protect you against retaliation. He is serious about work time then you must be serious about personal time. There should be a break room made available for employees. Enjoy your food and your break. It’s legally yours not his! But that’s just me? more

  • Ask your (un)supervisor if he can create a break room. It sounds as though it is your boss' personal pet peeve, rather than official written company... protocol.  more

  • I’m a past Supervisor. In some offices there should be a designated place for you to eat. If not, it’s understandable that you eat lunch at your desk.... Read your employee Handbook. Talk with HR and EEOC.
In my office, we ate at our desk or in the lunch room. It was our choice.

  • Even if HR rules says you can is that a fight worth fighting?
Find another quite place, grab headphones, your book and your lunch and relocate for... 30-45 minutes. Is there a break room or a private area on another floor? I drove so I would go sit in my car.  more

  • Put up a "AT LUNCH" sign so everyone knows your at lunch. When your finished, clean up your desk and take down the sign.

  • You can't do look at hr employee handbook. It could be interpreted your boss or company doesn't give breaks or lunches. Perhaps go to the designated... area to eat. The department of labor can come after the employer.  more

  • Never eat on your desk at the place of your work to begin with.
He probably doesn't want you to make things dirty and the desk is
not really a place... to eat.
If possible, find a space where you can eat in peace and without issues. But not at the desk.
