I’ve been working as an accountant for 20 years. Lately, I’ve lost interest, there’s no growth and I don’t feel motivated anymore. How can I reenter the job market? What field should I look into to find a more interesting job?
Thanks

It’s so powerful that you’re being honest about where you are — that’s the first step toward real change. 🙌🏽

After 20 years in accounting, you’ve... built an incredible foundation of analytical, organizational, and financial skills that are highly transferable. You might find renewed excitement by pivoting into areas like:

💼 Financial consulting or business strategy– helping small businesses grow.
📊 Data analysis or financial technology (FinTech)– blending numbers with innovation.
🧑🏽‍🏫 Education or training – teaching bookkeeping, QuickBooks, or business finance.
🚀 Entrepreneurship or fractional CFO services– using your expertise on your own terms.

To reenter the market, start by updating your résumé and LinkedIn to reflect results and impact, not just responsibilities. Then, network intentionally — online and offline — and consider short certifications (AI, data analytics, or project management) to refresh your skill set.

You’ve already proven you can master complex systems — now it’s just about finding the next chapter that excites you again. ✨

  • Kyle, theres always growth in servitude. What if its not the market but just your expression. For the amount of years placed. What if you could help... change lives with what you know. Have you thought about making a digital products like a course or ebook. Host workshops. We’re in the era of empowerment and the ability to speak finance and know the rules is a game changer for those who’s ignorant to this info. What if you got paid a handsome pay to serve others in the highest manner sharing the ends and outs of accounting? Would this excite you? You’re now traveling to speak to the youth and give them foresight. You’re seeing and hearing pol share how you helped change their lives. If the answer is no then yes, change markets. If its a yes switch up your expression and mindset on how you’re exercising your knowledge more

  • What are you passionate about? If you go get some other job for salary, I would expect you will end up in the same position you find yourself in... now...
I'm a math nerd, I almost majored in Accounting, but thankfully I decided to go with International Business because it gave me skills in many areas. I've worked in banking & finance, marketing, sales, administration, finally I became an entrepreneur - this has by far the most rewarding!
With your knowledge & experience, you could quite easily become an entrepreneur as well, bang out a few digital products (teaching accounting, coaching, small business advisor, freelance, passion business, etc.) There really is no limit to the possibilities...
I wish you all the best, trust in yourself, you are limitless!
