I’ve noticed that someone keeps stealing my food from the office fridge - milk, yogurts, even fruit.
I found out it’s one of the top managers. I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose, he’s a bit absent-minded and probably just takes food as if he were at home. But my salary can’t afford to feed another mouth. How can I tell him to buy or order his own food?

Stella: This sounds like a movie in the making starring Robert DeNiro. In all seriousness, your boss knows exactly what he is doing; make no mistake... about that. Take Greg's advice one step further and bring a adequate size cooler that can fit under your desk and buy one of those freezing gel packs and keep your lunch/snack in there. Hopefully, he might get the hint and if he asks why, just tell him it saves time from having to go to the fridge and that it allows you to stay focused at your desk. He can't possibly fault you for wanting to be more productive. Of course, we both know the real reason why. If that fails, then put a little mouse trap on top of your food and see how that pans out! Good Luck!! more

  • Aiming to avoid seeming like A VILLIAN in this scenario, you could begin taking known-spoiled / rotten foods that appear in your home refrigerator or... storage. - Packaging these in *special containers* since you want to avoid eating them - yourself (you could / should take (hopefully) each container back home to wash after work) you could set-out servings as (shall we say?) BAIT.

This ^ setting was evident in my work setting when a Lunch-thief took others' meals. It was later-revealed that a neighborhood Homeless person had found the corporate booh-yah of foods during these storage-time. The office-staff took her on in aim to help her survive by adopting her care to the regional Food bank.

  • If you have been in the job for a while, you can probably judge the sort or person your boss is. If you think he is a reasonable person, have a... private conversation and tactfully mention that you bring your lunch to save money. Ask him to respect your actions and not take what is yours. If you think he's someone who will fly off the handle, then the suggestions of a lunch box with a cold pack or a mini fridge will probably be your best bet. Please avoid the suggestions to lace food with laxatives. You have no idea what medication use or conditions people around you are dealing with. If someone is harmed by the laxative, you would be liable. This situation calls for constructive correction, not retaliation. more

  • You do nothing - you get a mini fridge for your desk & you put your food in it & say nothing . Most people who take others lunch have nothing... themselves- opening your mouth could cost you your job because of embarrassing a boss means retaliation- not worth the problem.  more
